Yankees hit road Time ripe for N. Y L A. to flex biceps By Tim Moriarty . UPI Stiff Writer Now is the time for the New York Yankees and the Los An geles Dodgers to show their mus cles in the major league pennant races. The Yankees trailed the Balti more Orioles by 2Vi games and the Dodgers were 2 games back of the San Francisco Giants when all the teams took time out Mon day to catch their collective breaths. Both the Yankees and the Dodg- John McGraw named greatest ball manager i BOSTON (UPD-John (Mugg sy) McGraw, who guided the New York Giants to 10 National League pennants and three world championships, was hailed today as the top major league baseball manager of all time by the Acad emy of Sports Editors. ;' McGraw, a member of base ball's Hall of Fame, was named on 83 per cent of the ballots cast by the academy, which is made up of 100 of the nation's leading sports editors. Joe McCarthy, who managed the Chicago Cubs to one pennant and the New York Yankees to eight thus becoming the only man to win pennants in both ma jor leagues, was second in the voting "with 64 per cent. Connie Mack, whose Philadelphia A's won nine pennants, was third, also with 64 per cent but just missing second place. Casey Stengel, present manag er of the New York Mets who piloted the Yankees to 10 pen nants and seven world champion ships, was fourth with 61 per cent. Miller Muggins, whose Yan kees won six pennants, was fifth with 49 per cent. ers will be on the road for the next two weeks, making their im mediate tasks all the more diffi cult. The Dodgers have won 18 of 25 games at home thus far this season but are 8-U on the road. The Yankees completed a 9-2 home stand Sunday to bring their season record at Yankee Stadium to 13-6. However, they are only 10-8 on the road. Starting with a night game at Boston tonight, the Yankees will play 15 road engagements in the next 14 days. Their most import ant stop will be at Baltimore next week, when they square off against the Orioles in three straight night games. Orioles Are Hot The Orioles, winners of eight straight and 13 of their last 14 games, play three-game sets at Kansas City and Los Angeles this week before returning home for their scraps with the world cham pions. The Dodgers launched a 15 game road trip last weekend at San Francisco, losing two of three games to the Giants. They move on to Milwaukee for the start of another three-game series tonight then have stops at Cincinnati, Houston and Chicago before re suming their war with the Giants at Los Angeles June 10. Maury Wills wasn't with the Dodgers when they headed east, remaining in Los Angeles for X-ray treatment of a foot injury. If the calcium deposit on the sec ond toe of Wills' left foot doesn't respond to treatment he may re quire surgery. That would knock the base-stealing champion out of action for another three weeks. Houk Optimistic While the Dodgers were having their share of troubles, manager Ralph Houk of the Yankees was extremely optimistic when he left for Boston. "We've got good reason to feel pretty good as we start on this long trip," he said. "We've just finished a fine home stand, the lineup is solid for the first time and the pitching has been looking up." When it comes to pitching, though, you can't beat that Balti more staff. Milt Pappas, unbeat en in four decisions, is pacmg all American League pitchers with a 1.59 earned run average. Teammate Steve Barber (8-3) is third with a 2.27 ERA mark and Robin Roberts, another Bird is sixth with a 2.65 average. Pendleton in semis tonight By United Press International Madison of Portland moved into the Class A-l finals of the Oregon high school baseball playoffs with a 4-1 victory over Hillsboro in a semifinal game at Hillsboro Monday. Medford meets Pendleton at Pendleton tonight in the other semifinal contest. Rick Wise pitched a one-hitter for Madison in its seven inning game with Hillsboro. Wise, who struck out 11 and walked six. gave up a single in the sixth in ning to Dave Blatchford. Bandon and McKcnzie gained the finals of the Class A-2 play offs. Bandon defeated Yamhill- Carlton 3-1 at Bandon and Mc- Kenzie topped Woodburn 2-0 at Woodburn in the semifinals. In Class B, Crow reached the finals with a 2-1 win over Jeffer son at Lowell in a semifinal game. Wasco County met Adrian at Adrian today in the other semi final contest. EXPECTS SELLOUT COLUMBUS, Ohio (UPD-Ohio State University will mail out about 30.000 season ticket appli cations Saturday for the 1963 foot ball season. Ticket director George R. In the Cascade loop, the Veter ans of Foreign Wars team explod ed for three tallies in the first inning to glide on home with a 5-2 victory over Shoop & Schulze. Shoop & Schulze managed to pick up a run in the fourth and another in the sixth frame. John Newell led the veterans, going two for two in the batters box. Tom Riley went the distance, giv ing up only six hits, and picked up the win for the VFW. In the American League, the Moose mallet swingers cut loose for a field day In five giant inn ings to post a 16-4 triumph over the Dairy Queen nine. Moose baseballers went wild with four runs In the first, three in the third, three in the fifth, to walk away with the affair at Harmon park. Three Moose lads went four for four at the plate. They were: Burl Flannary, Phil DeGree, and Robert Nipper. Over at Marshall Field, the Na tional League saw the Elks bow to the Lelco team, 4-1. Lelco scored two of its four tal lies in the first frame, as Elks errors proved costly. Jim Tnmv bly, Lelco pitcher, lead the bat ting parade as he got a double in three trips to the plate. Jim Trumbly gave up two hits and went the full five innings for uie Lelco win. Deluge forces postponement MEMPHIS, Tenn.
