ning of the offensive campaign in

Considerable interest is felt in the
conference hold by the British colon
ial premiers in London. The con
ference is believed to be significant
because of. tbo heavy losses sus
tained on the western front by the
troops furnished for the war by the
colonial governments of Great Britain.

WASHINGTON. Jan. .Pres
ident Wilsou is the oldest executive
to preside over the destinies of the
United States for the last 60 years.
When he Is inaugurated for the sec
ond time on March S be will be 60
years old. a span of years that no
president has crossed since the In
auguration of Buchanan in 1S57.
Incidentally, the president is one
of the six oldest executives ever
in the White House. Previous to
1S61 the men chosen to hold the
reins of government generally reach
ed a late period in life before elec
tion. Johu Adams was 61 when in
augurated in 1797, Jackson also
was 61 when first inaugurated iu
1S29. Benjamin Harrison was the
oldest man ever chosen for the pres
idency, being 62 at the time of his
Inauguration In 1841. Taylor was
64, and Buchanan 65, respectively,
when they were Inaugurated.
Aside from these all presidents
have been younger than Woodrow
Wilson when entering the White
House. This has been particularly
noticeable in the last 50 years when
all executives have been compara
tively young. Theodore Roosevelt
Was the youngest president ever in
augurated iu this country, being but
42 when he took office.

NEW YORK, Jan. 16. Peace and
preparedness is writ large in the
spirit of tlic design on both sides
of the new twenty-five cent peices
issued from the sub-treasury here
today. The new quarters are issued
today from the other sub-treasuries
in the country also.
On the obverse of the quarter.
Liberty is shown, a full length figure
from the upper to the lower rim of
the coin. Her bead is turned to the
left and she is shown stepping to
ward the gateway of the country.
On the gateway wall is the familiar
"In God We Trust." Miss Liberty
is also In the act of tearing the cover
from her trusty shield, typifying her
attitude toward protection. In her
right hand she holds forth an olive
branch. These two symbolize peace
and protection.
On the reverse is an eagle In full

' The preliminary Investigation of the
"leak" In connection with the Wilson
peace note which la being conducted by
the rules committee of the house waa ex
pected to bring forth aenaatlonal revela
tions. Democratic membere of the com
mittee were convinced that the testimony
of the witnesses aummoned to appear
would determine whether there waa a
mysterious leak or whether the recent
Mock market break which preceded the
White HoUae announcement of the presi
dent's peace nove was merely due to preaa
reports anticipating official announcement.
If the latter explanation appears to cov
er the - l ' probwhle thaf ms of the
flight, wings spread across the coin.
The designer is Mormon A. McNeill,
and his initial, "M," is visible on the
coin only with a microscope.

Broadly speaking, the distinction be
tween a line officer and a stuff otOccr

denied knowing In advance that the pres
ident was about to send a peace note to
Europe, and profiting In Wall street by
the knowledge.
Secretary Tumulty was the flrst to as
sail Representative Wood of Indiana "for
mentioning my name merely on hearsay
and rumor." Ills statement In part fol
lows; "1 am very glad to soy publicly that I
did not know of the existence of the pres
ident's note- on peace until the newspa
pers were Informed.
"Very frequently the president, who
knows that I am bombarded by newspa
per men and others for Information, saves
me embarrassment by keeping- matters ab
solutely aecrot. In fact, 1 have often sug
gested that this be done.
"I think Mr. Wood owes me public
apology for mentioning my name at all
merely on hearsay and rumor."
After reading Mr. Wood's testimony
