Never boforo In tho his tory of tho country has there been such a universal disposition to put money Into something that would guarantco roturns or help to curb tho extreme high cost of living. Tho condition of under production, scarcity ot labor and an Increased do mand for every manufactured prod uct forcod prices to a level nover reached in such a general way before There havo been times when some products have been high In price, each In Its turn, and each adjusting itself without causing a material change in tho modes and methods of buying and without affecting the dis position ot the public at large. But the present period of high prices has been so universal In affecting every thing bought by the Jobber, retail merchant and consumer alike that It ihas affected a complete change In the buying markets. The buyer, whether a retail mer chant or a consumer, has accustomed himself to buy only what he thinks Is reasonablypriced or what will direct ly and quickly reimburse him. This fact has been more conspicuous among the consumers than among other buyers. This season, in all Unet of manu factured products, a decided increase in quality has been noticeable. In this way prices have been substan tially reduced, but to date few ot the commodities most In demand have reflected a price decline. SJnce the organization of the Bend Merchants' association the problem ot how to sell merchandise at the very lowest price has been the prin cipal consideration. To aid In this endeavor. Booster day was origi nated. Each member of the associa tion prices at least one article, and not more than three, at cost, and, in many Instances, less than cost, and otters these articles for salo on a set day of each raonth-r-Bond Booster day. With tho bargains ot each store combined in ono great salo comes the possibility to save on many need ed articles, and those who nro taking advantage ot tho big bargain day nro to a great oxtent beating tho high cost of living.
