XM.GR 0. THE DEND IICLLKTIN, DKN1), OHM., WEDNESDAY, FKDRl'AllY 17, tOM. WAY OF KILLING COYOTES TOLD POISON FOUND TO SUCCESSFUL BE Dtatrlct Forester Ij"um Hxtrocts Prom Deport of Suponlsor Who Got 32 AnlmnN In One Month In Malheur Xntionnt Fortwt. In vlow of tho prevalence o( rabies among coyotes In Eastern Oregon, tho district forester at Portland, Ore gon, has announced tho results of eorao very effective work thnt has been done by the Forest Servlco in destroying theso animals. Of nil tho predatory animals killed in tho dis trict last year by Forest officials. 31 per cent were killed on tho Malheur National Forest by n method which Supervisor Bingham found very suc cessful. In one month last winter Mr. Dlnghnm killed 32 coyotes In tho vicinity of John Day, devoting only half his tlmo to tho work. For tho benefit of tlioso who have been tho victims of theso mad animals, nn ex tract from Supervisor I) Ingham's re port on his method of dealing with the coyotes Is given herewith: "A poison should bo selected that will loso its effectiveness In a short time after being placed, so that in caao it is not picked UP br a coyote it will do no damage Tho Northwest Hide & Fur Co.. Minneapolis, Minn., sells a poison of this character In tho shapo of a small capsulo containing enough poison to Immediately kill a coyote. The price is $1.75 per 100 capsules. In ordering theso capsules it must be stated for what purposo they are Intended so that the proper alio will be secured. Different sliod capsules are required for different nnlmala. "To prepare capsules for uso, take n roll of old butter, preferably a lit tle rancid. Warm it until it Is soft enough to handle well, but not enough to melt It. Caro must bo used not to touch the butter with tho hands. Uso a small wooden paddle that has no human scent to It. With this paddle cut off a piece of butter about tho sire of a marble; lay-it on an unscented board and flatten It out; place the capsulo on the strip of butter; roll the butter around tho capsule, leaving It as nearly round as possible Take a small pair of wooden pincers and placo tho butter rolls In a Jar that Is free from scent. Never uso metal to handle tho butter or capsules always wood." Then let the butter rolls freezo or harden and keep them In a cool placo until used. The carcass of an old cow or horse should be used as bait a fresh carcass preferred. Placo the bait on top of a knoll or hill, such as coyotes frequent Avoid ground covered with brush. Da not kill the bait by shooting, but by sev ering the main arteries in the neck. All operations must be done from horseback, so that no odor will be left on the ground to keep the coy otes away. Throw two or three dozen capsules around the carcass, either In the snow or under natural debris. In conclusion. Mr. Dinghara says: "Too much emphasis cannot bo laid on the necessity of leaving no human scent, either on the poisoned rolls of butter, or on the ground about tno carcass. Firearms should never be carried. One might occas ionally be able to shoot a coyote it he had his gun along, but In doing so he would do moro harm than good. Everything used in the preparation and placing of the bait should be ab solutely free from scent. One should never dlsmouU within halt a mile of the carcass for any purpose, nor leave anything about the bait that could possibly carry a human scent."
