As an adjunct to n "good (own W live in," tho Institution Holds in Important lnco. The library occupies comfortable Quartern In Its own building. It has a regular salaried librarian In attend ance during tho hours It Is w, and a well selected assortment ot books and practically all tho periodicals that aro to bo had. A comparison of figures that toll the library story today and In 1908, when It was started, Is Indicative of tho institution's growth. For tho year ending .February. 1909, there were 3397 visitors os contrasted to S030 fromMarch, 1912, in March. 1913. Tho number of books loaned tho first year was 1303; last year 4S32 wore taken out. The first 12 months there were 1G4 bor rowers; last year tho number was 735. HUtory of the Library. The Mend library had Its beginning at a meeting of some ladles at the home of Mrs. J. E. Sawhlll,- now ot Ohio, on tho afternoon of February 16, 1908. Then the following ofli cers elected: Mrs. C. D. Rowe, pres ident; Mrs. F. F. Smith, vico presi dent; Miss Mary E. Coleman, secretary-treasurer: Mrs. E. D: Wilson was appointed librarian and Still re mains In that position. The following Saturday night a basket social was given, "which, with only $1 axponses, netted tho organi zation 6S.90. At the outset 17 monthly maga rlnes and flvo weeklies wsjre takon. and arrangomonts which still "are in effect were made to have the Ore gon State Traveling Libraries, 50 books, sent to Hand every sis month. Today the library takes IS monthly and eight weekly niagminae. Opened April 0, J 008. The library had Its official open ing In the old Lawrence building on Wall setreot (now tho property of Leon Fulks) on April C, 1908. The books were 3S to which tho library fell boir from a former magazine club, which was the first "reading institution" In .the town. The' Mrs. a. II. Furst and Mrs. P. W. hrown to arrange for tho iinnunl fiowor show about August 20. This event has assumed rather largo pro portions. Last year about $00 in cash and about 25 In merchandise prizes wcro awarded, besides a beau tlful sliver cup. It Is expected that this year's show wll be much larger as more flowers aro borne raised. From the first the library has been sustained by the efforts of the ladles of the town, wno came to Its aid at frequent Intervals with moaey-rals-ing entertainments of all kinds. Tho city contributes 1S a month to Its support. Indicating the varied efforts of tho ladles In raising money, the follow ing list ot recent entertnlnmenU may bo of Interest: Ice cream sale.
