For Instance, as far as money expendi ture Is concerned, tbo Great Northern Railroad system cost about as much - as the Canal, and tbo Ilarrlman sys tem Infinitely more. Uncle Sam will have paid out nearly $400,000,000 whon the ditch Is dono. That sum Includes the $40,000,000 paid the French com pany for their property and $10, 000,000 given Panama for the Canal. zone territory, 'mis means, ap proximately, that every person living la the United States has contributed about $4 toward building tbo Canal. Think of a fifty-mile ditch large enough to let tbo biggest vessels built pass each other, and with locks and dams and wonderful mechanical de vices of all kinds, constructed under most adverso conditions in a tropical climate 2000 miles from' the base of supplies! Makes a little old Colllo Canal look like a street gutter, doesn't UT In passing through from the At lantic to tho Pacific a vessel will .enter .the approach cbannol In Llmon j "JJay, which-will haro a bottom width I of S00 feet and extend to Oatun, a distance of about sevon miles. At Oatun it will enter a series of tbrco locks and bo lifted 85 feet to Gatuu Lake. Thero tho steamer will bo In a great Inland sen, for this artificial lake covers 1GI squaxo miles. It Is formed by tho biggest dam ever at tempted; Gatun Dam Is a mile and a half long, nearly half a mile wldo at Its baso. Its top will be at an eleva tion 115 feet above sea level, and It will contain about 21,000,000 yards of material. In other words, whon you make tho trip through the ditch nftr 1914, from tbo Paolflc to tho Atlantic you will bo sailing westward. Tho explanation to this phenome non Is that tho Isthmus takes a big loop, nnd whore tho Canal Is cut through It la running practically northeast and southwest. Instead of duo south, as wo generally suppose It docs. There It will o lowered to sea level, and pass out to tho Pacific through a channel eight and a half bottom, The depth will vary from 4C to 85 feet. An Interesting fact In con nection with tbo construction Is that the tido on tbo Atlantic sldo has a maximum rise ot 2 V, feet, while on the Pacific there Is a riso of 21- foot. It Is estimated that a vessel will require botweon 10 and 12 tours to make tho passago through tho Canal. ; Excavation on tho Canal will total moro than 182.C0O.000 cubic yards. Kqulpment Is Knonuou. And remem ber that evory bit of It Is used to capacity, for on the Zone thoro Is no loafing, oltbor for men or machinery; everyone Is at tho job without let-up, for several years ago tbo "soft snaps" were abolished and now the only ones who can hold Jobs aro thq men who make good, for wbatevor can be said of Government work else where, at Panama it assuredly Is on a business basis. In the first place, there aro about. D000 Americans working for the Canal Commission, and somo 30,000 Jamaican negroes, Spaniards and other foreigners. At tho outset Mr. llawlny said thai most ot the decisions of tho Genornl hand ORlco and Interior Dopartmont aro prepared by subordinate clerks and law officers and signed by tho hundreds, without examination, by the Commissioner and tho Secretary. Cases that aro appealod are passed upon ofton by the same subordinates who rendered tho original adverse decision and naturally thoy sustain themselves. "Frequently reports from special agonts or others are regarded aa so- crot," sa'd Mr. Hawley, "and nelthor the entryman nor anyone In his bo half Is allowed to read them. What they contain of truth or error cannot be determined. They appear to bo regardod as of more value than tho known and sworn ovldenco of com petent witnesses. The entryman Is held not to havo answered certain charges, so mado. How can ho an swer an unknown charge, especially a charge ho never suspected anyotio would mako, because not foundod upon fact? "Too many contests are allowed against homestead and other entrica. An entryman files on a parcel of land. Ho builds a house, barn, fences and clears somo of the land. Tho place begins to look like a home. Somo envious or covotous person sees so much accomplished and begins a con test against the entryman. alleging non-residence, lack of cultivation, etc. The case drogs Its weary way. The plan Is to wear out tho original homesteader, and then by preforonco right ns tho contestant, to take tho fruits of another man's toll practi cally by force. Secret I'mcms Opponcri.
