(Contined from page I.) with aitl of that stick, he generally succevds. This sort of thing does not appeal to Miss Wood, who has a tender spot for dumb brutes. One morning while driving in Palermo, vc passed a mau pounding his donkey over bead and ears with the but of his whip. This so roused her indignation that she shouted at him in English, "Stop that, stop that you brute!" her face livid with excitement and her hands gesticulating to emphasize her words. The man ceased in stantly as if paralyzed, and stood stupidly staring at her without the slightest conception of what was the matter. "Yes yon, you brute. I would like to hit you that way!" The donkey blinked one eye open, batted back one ear and looked as bewildered as Lis master. There they stood watching until we were two blocks away and lost tu the crowd, doubtless pitying the foreign scnorina who evidently had fits. If remonstrated with the Italian assures you that "an unimal has no soul," evidently deeming there is nothing more to be .said. The foreigner; have started a .society for prevention of cruelty to animals which it doing good work, but the natives can't comprehend why any one should fuss so. On arrival at Naples we were dumped bag and baggage onto the warf in the early morning, but no cabs in sight. For 15 minutes we exhausted our Italian and French trying to gtt one of the excited porters to go and find one. They only jabbered and gesticulated, but never moved a step. Finally a man told Miss Wood in German that none would come. The cab men were on a strike because the authorities insisted upon attaching meters to the cabs to prevent the constant overcharges and inposi tions on visitors. Finally a man nariiesseu our larger baggage over his shoulders and taking the other pieces in our hands we filed oil to the steamer office at a neighboring MeMist Episcopal Church Regular service on th first and third baUUthi of each month, at II a. m. and 8 n. in. iUiV. C h. JaOWTiuuc, l'utor. 1 Reasonable Terms or Generous Discount; for Full REND, CRPOK warf, deposited it there till the afternoon boat and then started off to search for breakfast. Naples is the toughest place in Italy, and the cab men tough Neapolitans, Soldiers ant) hundreds of extra police were massed in the city, but after a week the authorities gave in and the cab man, with his gouging and wrangling, continues to be a feature of Naples. What a commen tary on Neapolitan character, that all the police have to Ijc imported from Rome because local men can't be relied upon. That evening wc got back to Capri. It was like getting back home after a long absence. After seeing so much and being so con stantly on the go, it whs impossible to realize that wc had only been away a little over two weeks, but they certainly were two of the most interesting I had ever spent. A. M Dkakj:. New Library Uulldlnz. Work was begun on the new library building last wrek, and is progressing very nicely. The build ing will be 25 feet by 40 feet 111 size, and will make the library a comfortable home. There is no doubt that when the carpenters get through with it ami the ladies of the library association take charge, it will be made one of the prettiest places in town. Examiner. Jack Rnbblts Increasing. There is a noticeable increase in the number of jack rabbits in this part of Crook county this j eat Not tio very long ago these rabbits were such a pest in Eastern Ore gon that grain crops and' gardens were destroyed by them. From present indications it looks as though we were to have a recur rence of the pleague. -Journal, Consumptives Msde Comfortable J'olcy's Honey and Tar ha cured many cases of incipient conauntiitloii mid even in the udvnuceil atu",t' afford comfort and relief.
