THE QKAhQe. docretsry for Washington Tells of Benefits 1o Be Derived 11 Ftnl W. Iwl. Krtrrtmrr Whlnrtin flUU drawn, Tumwalcr, Wuhlfluunn. The Urango has, for forty yeais, stood for the upliftment cf tlio farmer, and we only have to look back, over Its hlitory, to see what It has accorn pilsned for us. It Is to tho Orange that we owe the rural mall delivery, (he oleomagarlno uillbtho denatured alcohol law, and In many states It ha forced the passago of better lax Uws, mid other laws that assist In giving the farmer the benefit of his labor. Nor Is the wotk of the Orango alone directed to the urging the passago of laws. It becomes needful to prevent trie patfsge ol some laws that would bo detrimental to tbo best Interest of the farmer, and that is a part of the work the Grange decs. Hpaco will not permit me to go into details, but anyone may obtain the de tails by asking for thorn. Although wo lake an Interest In the legislative work of our people, we also benefit thorn in many ways besides To the young roan and witnan, we offer a chance to gain pleasure and profit in the meetings of tho Orango, a we carry on our meetings In strict par llamentary manner, 'providing wo get the right person for Master, and so give them a chance t learn how such work Is dono. We also have literary pro grams, providing we get the right per son for Jjccturer, and so giro them a chance to practice speaking In public, and appearing on the rostrum beforo sn audience, all ot which is a benefit tn any young or, in fact, an older perron, too, in these times ol public awakening. To the father and mother, who are the providers for a family, It gives thcrn a chance to purchase their needed s ap plies In connection with their biotheis and sisters, and so gain the advantage that is to be derived from wholesale dealing. - To the home owner, It'provldel a safe and aure, a woll a cheap insurance for hit property, and any member of the Grange, who is attauhod to any subor dinate Orange ia entitled to that beneflt. Our Insurance is carried at exact coit, and we are laying by no surplus to bo loat by poor Investments, ot by the dis honesty ol the otllcors, but we keep enough on hands at all tiroes eo that we can pay all losses promptly, upon the proof being sent in. In life Insurance we have none to offer that will answer the demands of the great majority of onr patrons, but we aro working on a plan, that will nl tlmately furnish usa llfo Insurance ss well as a property insurance, and on the tamo basis, that ot actual coat. In the line ol purchasing and selling, we are not as woll organised as we would like to be, but as the dealers sro all In combines, and the commission mon are all united by common consent, It behooves us, a farmers, to combine If we would protect our own interests and obtain tho Just rewards lor our labor and enjoy the better accommoda tion that we might have it we could obtain the real fruit of our labor. Ia tho Qrnnze we place woman wheie abe belongs, op an equality with man, and so make our order a truly social one, and oar urango work Include tho enjoyment of tbo fruits of our labors, as well as tho education ol the mind, and the guarding of the purse. In conclusion let me atato tbo pur posos ot tho Grange, as eet forth In the declaration ol purposes adopted by tho founders ot tho order: To dovolop a highor and better man hood and womanhood among ours olves. To enhano- the comforts and attractions ot the home, and strengthen our attach ments to out pursuits. To foster mu tual understanding and co-operation. To maintain inviolate our laws, and to emulate each other lu labor, to hasten tlio gcod time coming, To reduce out expenses, both Individual and corpor ate. To buy less and produce more In order to make our farm self sustaining. To diversify our crops, and to crop no more than we ran cultivate. To con dense tho weight of our exports, selling less in tbo bushel and more in boot and in fleece, and less In lint and ronro In warp and woof. To systematise our work and calculate Intelligently ou probabilities. To discountenance the credit system, tho mortgage system, the fashion system, and eveiy othor system that tends to prodigality and bankruptcy. Wo propose meeting together, talk ing together, working together, buying together, selling together, and in gon eral, acting together for our mutual protection and advancement. It wo, as farmers, become organized, we bavo tho pov, or to ask for what we want and to get it, because wo have the numbers, and all that Is required la tho union that Is tho moans of unifying that power. Think tho matter over, and decide to crganlse a Grange and so help to make this world moio worth living In. Kiev Hli.no Hiugr, Tioll three-quarters of n cup of rice In milk In a doublo boiler. Qovsmmsnt Witnesses Tall of t-anet SteaHng by Settlers. Portland, Jan. 21. With testimony strong and apparently conclusive, the governoamt yeiterday by several wit nesses in tho Hall-Mays conspiracy trial exposed the bold and law defying; operations of the Butte Creek Land, Livestock & Lumber company, and dis closed to tbe Jury bow during tbe yeara 1000 and 1901 this company acquired fraudulently a considerable are of publletand. By tbe same evideoee It waa shown how this land grabbing cor poration by tbe acquisition of these lands was enabled to complete the en closure of a still larger area ot govern ment land to which other settlers were denied access for erasing purposes. Ileney, for the ptoeecotloa, made considerable progress in establishing the existence of a conspiracy aracag tbe members of tbe Butte Oresk company and be said last night that the govern- m-nt'a case would be supported still further aa to tbe alleged contplrtey by the introduction today ot more testi mony of tbe same cliaraett r as that presented yesterdsy.
