Nearly 70 pupils nre no,w en rolled in the ltend school uud u dozen othars arc in sight, it is probable that Mrs. Owrturf will lw employed to tench the three pri mary grades, temporary quarters for which will Iw fitted up in Mitt xig's hall. This will Rive the ' re lief for which there is now urgent demand. Whether it will be neces sary to employ still another leach cr cannot now be foretold. At this writing it is expected to open the new department next Monday morning if carpenters can be' had to nutKe tue necessary ucsics. NO RECOURSU ON HOND. . The statutory Iwtld given by justice of the peace does not cover cases like that of ex-Justice Drpck, of JJcud precinct, which was referred to in circuit court proceedings at Prineville Inst week. That bond is only for security of money that may come into the hands pf the justice. Any delinquency other than financial is not reached by it. There apparently beiiR no cause of action on the bond, the only remedy would appear tp be under .section 1S92 of the Ilellingcr and Cotton code, which provides as follows: If any onVrr ofthl rtate. or of any county, tewa.er other tuaiiictpal or public cwptWalkHi tfctrrln, ether than the Rorernor Justice of tlrc BMOiiWy, hall Hlllfiilly ami LnonuiRly Perform any duly or aenrlcc rtainlii; to hi m. wu( OrntMllwitlfMlly mirni io injure or unruitu any onr neglect or refine to prrfirn tieliilafi ar trxiet to Ike luturv of inv imp. or the nfrVt hindrance or obMruction uf pMblk iuttke dr IwalucM, whether uch injury, tla Cnnce. or obttrucUon wa particularly intended oriiiit. tatth oflicir, upon contclio Ihrreot. hlt be punUhtd y lmprionmru( in th peni tentiary not Ick than lx month nor more thiH oneear, 01 hy iutrlunroent hi the ouunt) jail not it Ihati three month uer inorc than one year, or liy Cue not let llua Shy more than Svr ctnttdrnl dollar, or !' dimiKit from office vtllli or without cithtr or auy of mfch uaih menu. The supreme court has dacided that where material matters wee omitted from a justice' record the ,entry may be sujipltetl by a nunc pro tunc order, but it is hardly probable that tliu remedy would be .applicable after the justice' term has expired and the data from which to make the record is wholly missing. , r ' 1 SHORT HISTORY OF OREOON. There are histories and historic. .ot Oregon, but wjiere will one go for a comprehensive and trustworthy .statement of the events out of which this commonwealth grew and of its progress as an independent com munity? There are books on the Oregon question, on Astoria, 011 the fur conijmnic, on the Indian wars, etc., etc., hut for an intelligent stutemeut of all these matter it has remained for Miss Sidona V. John son to compile her "Short History of Oregon" which has just been published by A. C. McClurg & Co. The very first impression of it is favorable it is a handy volume of 329 5x7 pages printed in type a little larger than this. It is well illustrated with maps and photo graphic views, all finely executed. It has an excellent index, and the contents are attractively arranged. To one who values accuracy of statement above piquancy of style this Iwok is a great relief, because it makes the statements with can dor and simplicity and leaves the .special arguments for others; It is, ns the author very frankly states , a compilation of Oregon history rather than the result of personal investigation of original sources, but there is enough original work in it to give it character and to .stamp it as a book of high excel ieucc The Iewis and Clark re naissance has made a new demand jgr the factf of Oregdn history and ''I , i ' 0 A , Jfc caarcc, lake or rcccuc nity irvof cpfnKUaKMi. blhtr tbau outhMlint or vcrmlttru Uy (. for an) official aervicv or dulj ptrformrq liy (nch officer, or ahalt willfully ucclcct or refine to the appearance of this volume is timely. It would be especially valuable in the public schools ami the State Text-book Commission ought to adopt it. No QUthely new writing, no matter how delightful in style or novel in plan far general reading, could compare with this careful mid clear "Short History of Urugpu tor use in tnesciiooui, Advertised Letters.
