Tha members of the local firs de
partment hare at different times
called attention to the need of better
and more adequate fire protection at
the public and high schools in this
city and the fire of a week n o em
phasises the importance of this need
at this time. I, myself, hare often
felt that at both buildings there
should be some arrangement where
by the'children could get out of the
building In case the ordinary exits
were blocked by fire. I believe that
the people of New berg could not
spend their money any better than
to install at both schools either suit
able fire escapes or chutes so that
the children could be rushed, out if
the fire started in such a place that
they could not get out of their reg-
ular doors.
Under normal circumstances the
children can be put out of eitehr of
these buildings in a matter of min
ute or more. They are trained so
that when the gong sounds they im
mediately Une up and march out.
Bach grade has its regular place of
exit and thus by utUizLng all of the
various' doors, the buildings are
emptied Tory rapidly. However, In
case that one or more o f these were
not available as might be the case
i f the fire were a big one, the con
fusion which might result might
cause the loss of several or even
