NOVEMBER 10, 1921 No. 6 COUNTY HEALTH ASSOCIATION NIGHT MARSHAL WAL R0N1G AND BRIDE RETURN NEWBERG WILL CELE THE WHITNEY BOYS’ FARMERS HELD MEET DR. FROM IS NOW TO BE ORGANIZED THEIR HONEYMOON TRIP LACE ON HOT CHASE BRATE ARMISTICE DAY CHORUS FINE CONCERT ING AT SPRINGBROOK MARKETING PROBLEM DISCUSSED Lively Seuion and Debate Took Place Last Saturday After noon at Springbrook T he fa rm e ra m e e tin g a t Sp rin g - brook w a s well a tte n d e d , wan very in te r e s tin g a n d v lm o s t s p e c ta c u la r in some Instances. B u t it showed th e su b je c t to be a live one. as all p re se n t listened w ith a tte n tio n , and several tim es th e r e were from th r e e to live c a llin g for re c ognition a t th e sam e tim e, w hile a t o th e rs, tw o sa n g in g r a n d opera style, t h a t is. duet p a r t of the tim e, th e n one or the ' o th e r* in a suprem e effort would suc ceed in m a k in g it a solo. But th e re were some very in s tr u c tiv e th in g s b ro u g h t o u t nevertheless. T h is was especially tr u e in re g a rd to th e f r u i t survey.. No d o u b t it w as a su r p r is e to most pre se n t, the am ount and* v a rie tie s of f r u its raised. We hope to get (bis at some n e a r f u tu r e tim e a n d publish it for those who may not have heard th e re p o rt of th e com m ittee. But th e s e c re ta ry of th e f a r m e r s ’ club is to m a k e a g e n e ra l com piling of th e e n tir e d u ta so it will be a v a ila b le a t u la te r date. W hen th is is done we will tr y to give a s u m m a ry of it. Several fa r m e r s th e n expressed th e ir o pinions e ith e r for or a g a in s t cooperation. R o b e rt C. P a u lu s, g e n e ra l m a n a g e r of th e Oregon Grower« association was present a n d gave a very in te r e s tin g ta lk . He said th e re w ere th r e e th in g s to find in s t a r t i n g a cooperative m ovem ent, especially ' a c a n n e ry . F irst th e a m o u n t of can- a c re a g e ; second, c a p ita l necessary to h a n d le per acre; and th ir d , a de pendable m a rk e t. Of th e three, th e last is th e most difficult a n d th e one w h e re success or fa ilu r e is made. He said t h a t the s t a t e wide o r g a n iz a tio n s w ere the ones th a t succeeded th e best for sev era l reasons. T he first of these was. th e small c a n n e r y or cooperative as sociation is not able to get sufficient d a ta a n d in fo rm a tio n to give the proper Judgm ent on selling. T h e n a g a in , th e a d v e r tis in g properly done, adds more to the cost in th e sm all association th a n in th e la r g e r one. A n o th e r reason for th e la r g e r associ a tio n is th e sales. It is very seldom th e sm a lle r c a n n e r y o r association can sell «for less t h a n 5 p e r cent, w hile in a s ta te wide association th e selling is done for a g re a t deal u n d e r this. Mr. P uulus advised th e fa rm e rs if they should o rg a n iz e and build a c a n n e ry to do so w ith an eye on the f u t u r e of th e fru it in d u stry . He says th e re Is a g re a t f u tu r e for th e fru it g r o w in g in d u s tr y in Oregon if th e m a r k e tin g Is expanded as fa st a s the g r o w th of the business w a r r a n ts . It has been found, in several cases, local u n its locally supervised, but u n d e r th e general head h a s proven to be a very good business proposi tion. A general o u tlin e of the Oregon G ro w e rs’ c ondition w as th e n given. I t w as sta te d th a t if all business was checked up, bu ild in g s paid for. etc., th e r e would be a su rp lu s of about $80,000. All notes th a t a r e payable from now on would add to th is s u r plus. Mr. Patilus said they were ju s t b e g in n in g to feel a little " o u t of th e woods’’ Not th a t tro u b le s were over, but a more se ttle d and e s ta b lished feeling prevailed. W. W. Silver said a few w ords on his experience w ith th e D undee co o p e ra tiv e association. He said tha t over a period of years, w ith th e e x ception of last year, he could have th r o w n w h a t it had cost him to b e long to th e association a w a y and yet been a h ead of th e ind e p e n d e n t g r o w er selling outside th e association. He said th e r e had been very keen effort to breaJt th e association by o u tsid e rs and o u tsid e b u y e rs several times. H e n ry Amoth gave a ta lk u r g in g in fa vor of a sm all o rg a n iz a tio n u n d e r a general head. T hen have a m an who would be a specialist in each line a t th e head of each o r g a n ization. Then local tro u b le could be c a rrie d to th e local m a n a g e r, w ho would present It to t h e pro p e r sources and pro p e r m a n n e r a t the head office. T h a t is. th e b e rry grow e rs would have th e ir o r g a n iz a tion. th e p ru n e g ro w e rs th e irs, th e apple gro w e rs th e irs, and so on for each, th e n th e e n tir e lot do th e ir selling and m a r k e tin g th r o u g h one agency. T h e re was only one t h i n g really and definitely settled a t th is m e e t ing and th a t was th a t th e present c onditions a re not sa tisfa c to ry . But th e best way to se ttle them Is yet a n open question and one w hich the com m ittee as app o in te d some tim e ago to m a ke th e survey, a re going to give th e ir ea rne st th o u g h t and best efforts to solve.
