SXtf K1ENLE & SONS LETTER WRITING IH THE - DAYS OP HEBUCHÀDNEZZAB Letters written by King Nebsichad- nextar of Babylon some 3,000 years ago have recently turned up in the , ■ Yale Babylonian collection, and have been translated by Professor Albert Jr. Clay, curator of the Babylonian section at Yale. Nebuchadnezzar wrote his letter ia a lordly tone, and his epistles convey -the word of the king^’ to the chief o f the temple of the god Marduk con cerning the juriediction of temple matters. Before being sent, a Baby lonian letter was placed In a nice flat clay envelope. A lot of loose sand was then shaken in around the letter to protect it from scraping against the inside of the -envelope and thus obliterating the message. The top was sealed with hot clay and stamped with the signet set in the sender's ring. Many' of the Babylonian letters show that they were incased, and aot a few bear tbe seal Impressions and the remainder of envelopes still adhering to them. Few of tbe letters were actually dated, and tbe senders o f some cannot be determined, hav ing probably been sent by tbe band of a family slave, and the name of sender was therefore not a necessary adjunct.— Detroit News.
