In g eneral, the sp irit of the con­
vention was reactio n ary and m a­
teria listic. H ard ly a single note of
Inspiration and Idealism was struck.
Indeed, idealism was frankly dep­
recated. The com m ittee seemed to
look upon all Idealism as W ilsonian
and therefore essen tially evil. This
convention, as is the custom of con­
ventions. proved its belief in demon­
ology w ith th e P resident as the de­
mon. On th e o th er hand, its demi­
god was Roosevelt. If a speaker
failed to get his audience, a ringing
reference to th e dead lion could ever
h e used as a last reso rt and with
considerable succeas.
T he convention waa long on rem­
iniscence and sh o rt on fu tu re policy.
It was en tirely fittin g therefore,
th a t when th e custom ary spell-bind­
ing was in o rd er to fill -In the gaps
of th e convention, men like Depew
and C annon, aged 87 and 84 re­
spectively w ere draw n upon.
It
was noticeable th a t th e insistent
calls for Beveridge w ere Ignored by
those g uiding th e destinies of the
convention. It was evidently feared
th a t a rin g in g address such as the
E x-S enator from In d ia n a n s capable
of m ight sweep th e convention off

nom ination of Beveridge -f o r th e
presidency.
If, as waa announced a t Its open­

unbossed, it d id n ’t rem ain so long.
The “Old G uard" was so ev id en tly in
control th a t it was easy to see th e
wheels go round. Even a t th a t, it
was in terestin g , for it could not be
accu rately determ ined, even by th e
O. G. itself. Just w here th e political
wheel of fo rtu n e would stop to in­
dicate the candidate, b u t th e choice
was appro p riately and logically
made. S enator H ard in g seems to fit
adm irably in to t h ^ R epublican pro­
gram . He is fran k ly conservative
and a m em ber of th e S enatorial
group w hich dom inates th e situ a ­
tion. W ith him as P resid en t th e
cen ter of political a u th o rity would
sh ift from th e W hite House to the
Senate.

conciliatory, courtly gentlem an bf
th e old school, of pleasing person­
ality, and said to be alm ost a coun­
terp a ct of M cKinley.
W hether
such a personality w ill fill th e
m easure of to day's need— th a t is the
question w hich th e delegates passed
up to the voters for decision In No­
vember.
This suggests the question of the
personnel of th e delegate body. It
appealed to us as essentially a typ­
ical group of practical politicians to
which little appeal could be suc­
cessfully
m ade on o th er than
grounds of political expediency by
such a group.

ground had no chance whatever.
T he delegates all knew he could be
elected but they also believed th at
alm ost anybody they would name
could be elected. Hence why give
a tte n tio n to a man who could hardly
be said to “ belong?”
