One of the latest Is the detection of crude oil In the earth Instead of boring for It. gg It Is stated that crude petroletmj has been located electrically In the shallow oilfield near Corsicana, Texas, and that further tests are being made around Bsirkbumett. A series o f bat teries is used for the test, the negative terminal being connected to a wire which Is dropped Into dry waterhole. valley or Indentation, and the positive terming) being connected to a "land wire.” which Is used to make contact at various points on the surface of the j field Investigated. It Is staled thlt the higher electrical resistance of oil compared with other conatltuents of the earth, permits It to he located by the reduced deflection of a sensitive Instrument In the circuit Pull Together for an Merchant Marine The war resulted In the creation o f a great merchant marine—10,000,000 tons of American ship* which cent na $3,000,000,000. Everybody aqreos that we must keep this fleet on the seas. ^ ^ • I f we fall back to pre-war conditions— when only 9 per cent of our foreign trade was carried in American ship*— We shall be in the position of s department store whose goods are delivered In Its competitor’s wagons. Congress Is considering legislation which will perpetuate eur war-built merchant marine. Until this le dene the shlpe we have sheuld net be eold to face conditions which, prior to tho war, resulted In thd decline of our merchant marine to Inolqnllleanoo. This Committee calls attention to these facta because a right solution of our shipping problem la vital to tho future prosperity of shipbuilding, but equally vital to tho safety and prosperity o f the nation. Is .— - Com m ittee o f A m erican It Is computed that the London, docks contain about 1.000.000 rata, which attack grain, food, and other cargoes, causing about $2,000,000 loss per annum. A society was established to exterminate this destructive enemy, but the congested state o f the wharves made their schemes Inoperative. Now a new benefactor has come forward with s “ trap” that opens up a possi bility o f putting armies o f rodents out of business. The process employed Is simple. Traps are placed along or near rat boles. The trap Is made o f cardboard covered with lithographic varnish. The varnish la warmed by heading Its container in boiling water till the varnish becomes sufficiently liquid, when It la spread 1-10 to 1-8 of an Inch thick on pieces pf straw- board or tbicklah cardboard, measur ing about 15 In. by 12 In. A margin of about 1 In. Is left clear o f varnish, and bait placed In the center o f thé board, where It adheres to the varnish. Bags o f 00 at a time have been se cured. The medical officer o f health for the P®rt of London reports favor ably o f the antidote to the rat thief, and gives It as his Opinion that once their tails stick on the board they are doomed, and -that the majority die o f frig h t Another feature Is that If two rats get on to the varnish to gether one o f them kills the ether, evidently thinking the other la holding him. . Nowa days It is fashioned Into pipes and then called something besides birch. The only evident reason for the change seems to bo the fact that the process that converts soft birch tnto a hard pipe was originated In a Latin American country, according to the New York Evening 8un. Birch wood owes Its, now name and Its present prominence In the pipe In dustry to the war, which cut off the supply o f briar and sent the prices of the stock» In America sky high. Substitutes have been sought for the expensive Imported briar. The ces sation o f Importations with the war— they haven’t been resumed yet— Inten sities the search for an American wood that would provide a suitable substi tute. Many native hardwoods were tried without success. Most o f them were either too hard to be worked into pipes or too heavy to rest comfortably be tween a smoker’s Ups. Then some one hit on the expedient o f trying a sof( wood and employing a process that would giv-» It the required hardness for use In pipe manufacturing. Birch was found the most suitable for the pur pose. PRICE CUTTING SALE E x tra USING Wood Hat Been Pound to Bo Eminent- ly Suitable, A fter Treatment by a Special Proc »os.
