A man in one of the infantry regi­
ments in No Man’s lund was taking
up us little room in a shell hole as
possible during a hot fight, with every*
thing singing overhead. At last a Ger­
man shell landed right In the bole
with hint, but did not explode. As soon
as he recovered from his fright and
could think again, he took a look at
the shell and found it was a dud (a
shell with defective fuse which does
not explode). Next he noticed the num­
ber on the shell, and something about
it struck him as being peculiar, ft

the New York Times.

an old law In Arabia, a slave Is freed
after seven years of sendee, provided
he has einbrnced the Moslem religion,
and It Is said that most of the slaves
do so. There Is no prejudice against
marriage with blacks In Arabia, espe­
cially after they are freed. This In­
termarriage has scattered a black pop­
ulation all over Arabia. In ports like
Muskat and Aden mulattoes and mixed
breeds are so common that the pure
Arab strain is almost a rarity.

prove Meridian Street, from the

said portion o f said street to con­
form to the established grade thereof,
by constructing concrete curba there­
on, by providing ayd constructing
street drainage for said portion of
said Meridian Street, by paving said
portion o f said street with hard
surface pavement same to be either
six inch concrete, five inch gravel
bltulithic or two Inch asphaltic con­
crete laid on a four inch concrete
base and by doing such additional
