W e wore Inspecting a line o f traps placed along a trail which led up a val ley to a wide plateau when the quer ulous squealing abruptly ceased. W a moved on, alert and tense. The tn stretched upward a fu ll 180 fast, their tops apread out in a leafy roof. In the topmost branches o f one w e could just discern a dosen balls o f yellow fu r from which proceeded discordant walla. It was a long range fo r a shotgun, but the rifles w ere all In camp. I fired a charge o f **BB’s” at the lowest mon key and as the gun roared out toe treetops suddenly sprang Into Ufa. They were filled w ith running, leaping, hairy form a swinging a t incredible speed from branch to branch— not n doom, but a score o f monkeys, yellow , brown and gray. Although the same troop could usually be (bund In the valley where w e had first discovered them, they chose hfll- sldes on which It was almost Impos sible to stalk them because o f too thorny Jungle. W e went forw ard only bon the calls w ere echoing through the Jungle and stood motionless as the w alling ceased. But In spite o f all our care they would see or bear us, Then In sudden silence there would he a trem or o f the branches, splash a fter splash o f leaves, and the herd would swing away through the track- lees treetops. The gibbons are w ell named Hyio- betes or "tree w alkers," fo r they are en tirely arboreal and, although awk ward and almost helpless upon the ground, once th eir long thin hands touch a branch they become trans form ed Into veritable spirits o f the treetops. They launch themselves Into specs, catch a branch twenty feet away to sw ing fo r an Instant and hurt them selves to another.
