Fairbanks, o f Indiana, the nation loses one o f its big brainy men— much big g e r than the present encumbent w ho is also an Indiana man. Tuesday said; “ President W il son today declared his opposition to further prohibition legislation until the food administration de cid es it is necessary to conserve fo o d s tu ffs " In all this house to house canvass, the nation over, in the interest o f the conserva tion o f foodstuffs can it be possi b le that the W hite House kitchen has been overlooked and the Pres id en t has heard nothing o f it? Th e County A gen t down in Coos is distributing sorghum seed among the fanners who pro- pose to * raise cane ’ and make their own molasses. During the C iv il W ar, sorghum grow in g was introduced in the Northern states, much to the discomfiture o f the sm all boy on the farm who had to hoe the spindling, miniature stalks, though his reward came m the w inter season, when, with a ration o f hot biscuit, butter and thick sorghum, he le ft the tab le with a full-some feelin g o f it make you cross to have to do without wheat while the brew eries are permitted to use enough grain to feed 200,000 soldier boys every d ay! W ell, this is no time to stop to argue the case— just get busy and use up all the bar ley and you w ill soon help Con gress to solve the question. Hoover says “ the re-discovery o f barley is a God-send. The food value o f barley is very sim ilar to w h ea t." L et us as patriots take Mr. Hoover at his word in urg- ing us with great fervo r to save the wheat fo r the A llies and in its place use barley. L e t us de vote ourselves with energy and enthusiasm to making barley popular and fashionable as a food; let us besiege our grocers to supply us liberally with barley fo r bread, biscuits, cookies, cakes and pies, and urge all our rela tives, friends, neighbors and ac quaintances to do likewise. L et us buy barley, talk barley and boost barley in the club, the church and on the stre e t L et us set the fashion o f barley breakfasts, barley luncheons, barley dinners; let us laud barley to the skies until the babies cry fo r it and epicures demand that it be served with their meals. And let us be equally diligen t in sounding abroad the other part o f the slogan, “ Bar the barley L e t us com er from the bar. the barley m arket L e t us in sist that not a particle o f grain be wasted in the breweries.
