MYSTERY OF THE PLANETS. RELIGIOUS WARS IN EUROPE. LOST IN LOVE. M w ii The Thirty Years' CsnUist and tiw • Route of Westphalia. All Weathers Ware Alike te These Twe Dreamers. Osnabrück la oue o f tbs most vener able towns o f Prussia. In tbs closing years o f the eighth century Charle magne designated It aa the capital o f a bishopric, a distinction which It an- joyed without Interruption tor more than a thousand years. In 1808 the see Was suppressed, the last bishop being Frederick, duke o f York, son o f the English Hanoverian monarch, Georgs I I L In 1868 the city was restored to Its religious eminence when It was again made the seat o f a Roman Cath olic bishop. I t Is on account o f her share to the preliminary negotiations which tod to the epochal peace o f Westphalia that Osnabrück la famous to history. In 1044, after all contra! Europe had been devastated by the great struggle which eventually became known as the Thirty Years’ war, representatives o f Sweden, the German empire and Gar- man Protestante met here, while to the neighboring city of Munster, thirty miles to the southwest, delegates from France. Spain, tbe German Catholics' and thé German empire gathered. Tb e negotiations extended over a pe riod o f four years. In October, 1648. both groups o f conferees hating ar rived a t a common basis o f settlement, tbe Osnabrück diplomats repaired to Munster, where a few days later tbe peace waa signed which guaranteed tbe sovereignty and independence o f tbe several states o f tbe empire and which forjjade religious persecution throughout Germany. It was this pence, in which Osnabrück played such a vital part, that put aa end to roll flous wars In Europe. A s early as 888 Osnabrück was granted the right to establish Its own mint, but it waa not until the fifteenth century tnat tue city renenea tne crest o f Is mediaeval prosperity. Following the decline which was necessarily inci dental to tbe ravages o f the Thirty Years’ war. it enjoyed a second era of growth. Th e two most Impressive architec tural piles to Osnabrück are the spa cious cathedral, dating back to tbe twelfth century and representing a combination o f tbe Romanesque end Transitional styles, and the .royal pal ace, built in 1602-75.—National Geo graphic Society Bulletin. A Man and a Maid who walked along ths garden paths were observed by the Moon, tbe Ko**es and the Night Wind. “ Here come two lovers,” chuckled the Moon. “ I will shins my silvor bast for their aakee.” “ Hare corns two lovers." murmured ths Rosas. “ Let us send forth our sweetest perfume to greet them." “ Here come two lovers.” sighed the Night Wind. “ I will whisper to them o f the magic that lies to a summer night.” But the M ood suddenly blotted ths smile from bis face. . "W e will not trouble ourselves.” h# declared. "These lovers are tbe same two who walked ths garden paths but yw tsra igh t And. for all we did our best to please them, what did they to return? They spoke no word o f my beauty - either of them.” “ And they never noticed us.” com plained the Roses. “ 1 remember them welt.” sniff ad the Night Wind “ They only said. 'It to a beautiful evening!' and gave ua no credit at all 1+1 ns do all we can to punish them .1 So the Moon hid behind the darkest cloud be could And. And the Roses withheld their perfume. And the Night Wind turned chill and rustled the dry leaves dismally, and even succeeded to finding a few stray raindrops and fling ing them iu a dank, graytob mist across tbe garden paths. O f Saturn’s rings w e cannot say whether they consist o f pill lions o f tiny moons Mke brickbats or whether they may be even smaller still—a veil o f shining dust. O f Jupiter we can only say that It Is eoveMd with clouds, though o f their substance w e know nothing, and that according to Professor Lowell and Sir WOUam Huggins some o f the bands w e aae on It may be lifts In the clouds revealing the body of the planet L it tle Unas ertrecroa* tbeee bands. Photo graphs o f Jupiter taken at Flagstaff observatory, Arizona, seem te indicate that these Uses, too, are the upper c leads o f Jupiter. But whenever we tee a planet we aee It badly. Sven Mars, the most dearly revealed o f th e n all,, la constantly ob scured by a refracting baas, so that even the famous "canals,” though nearly 000 to number, are only per ceptible a fe w at a time, and an un skilled observer would probably not make them rut at all. Sandstorms, sometimes snowstorms, sweep the surface o f Abe planet, and because the winds o f Math are very gentle and alow moving these occur rences take a long time to pass by. A snowstorm on U a n d l Indeed it was a snowstorm and not merely a fOg—once lasted three weeks. HYGIENE IN THE BEEHIVE. Tbs Way Intruder« Are Seeled Up In a Tomb of Was. The aborigines o f Queensland are fast fading away, and In view o f the fact that this race w ill soon be extinct an examination o f their social custom* Is Interesting. The death bone or bone apparatus, with its supposed property o f produc ing death, la one o f the moat dreaded and universal superstitions among tbe natives o f the Queensland interior. Tbs apparatus consists o f a pointer connected by string with an elongated cylindrical receptacle. The pointer, three to five Inches long, is made from a human forearm bone, tbe string is made from human hair, and the recep tacle, which incloses the victim’s life blood, to fashioned from s shin bone. The “ medicine man” o f the tribe uses tbe weapon by aiming tbe pointer at tbe person selected for punishment One o f the most curious o f the abo riginal weapons is the “ whirler,” or “ bull roarer.". It Is made o f a flat tened place o f gldyea timber cut Into spindle shape. Into one extremity o f which a bole is drilled with a sharp ened emu bone. By means o f the aper tore this whirler is attached to a piece o f string fixed at the end o f a small stick. Revolving rapidly, the whirler gives out a roaring sound.—London Telegraph.
