The Oregon Teachers’ M onthly
has completed a “ straw vote’

for choice o f candidates for state
superintendent, which shows a
large m ajority tor L. R. Aider-
man, formerly o f Yamhill coun­
ty . Mr. Alderman is a good
campaigner, as this early pace
show^, and if he can keep up the
d ip on the home stretch he will
land the prise. His Yamhill
friends are wishing him well in
the race. „
G. A. Graves has sold the En­

for 1910 is completed, Oregon
will divide honors with Nebraska

for the distinction o f possessing
the least number o f illiterates ac­
cording to population.

o f every home to see to it that
its children receive good edu­
cations and no child, no matter
what its environments, should
be allowed to grow up in Oregon
without knowing how to read
and write, the least that can be
done for their intellectual ad­
vancement.
“ But Oregon’s record concern­
ing the intelligence o f its masses,
only serves t o confirm the Regis­
ter’s repeated contention that
here on the Pacific coast, and
more especially in Oregon, is to
center the highest civilization
known to the World and around
this intellectuality will circle all
that is best and greatest in sci­
ence, art, literature and industry,
With this intelligence will finally
come commercial supremacy and,
in time, the gatew ay to the
orient would swing both w ays
in handling the traffic o f the
world.
