We notice that a number of o u r exchanges are running a big advertisement, sent out by a San Francisco company, exploiting the “ Kern Associated Oil Com pany” and offering a “ limited number ot shares for sale.” The same advertisement was offered to the Graphic at regular rates buc it was declined. The com pany is no doubt good for its obligations but our observation has been that not one time in a hundred does the small investor in these outside oil and mining propositions ever get om& penny back in return for w h a t^ e puts in, and consequently we don’t care to be the means ol placing such propositions before our readers. They always offer big returns and put it in a w ay that looks like a sure thing to the in experienced and to people of small means who can’t afford to Jose, but this is the class that is usually caught by these flaming advertisements and this is the unfortunate feature o f it. II peo ple who have money that they can spare want to invest in a proposition o f this kind, that is their lookout, but as a rule you will notice that people o f this class carefully investigate before they put their money into such a proposition. Money" kept at home and put into the legitimate channels o f trade may appear to be rather “ slow” when compared w ith the glittering offers made for investment in a “ limited” num ber o f shares o f oil stock, but in nearly every instance it will cause less loss o f sleep and fewer anxious days ot waiting than will an investment in the oily proposition that comes to you through the big newspaper ad vertisement or the handsomely printed tw o color circular. — The time is certainly at band when the streets in Newberg should be properly designated by posting the names at the street corners and the houses should all be numbered. It is difficult to di rect a stranger to any particular residence in town and the electric light people say that when an order is left at the office tor work it is often almost impossible to locate the party afterward if he is a stranger, unless some nota tion is made along with the name, saying he lives next door t o some well known citizen or in the vicinitv of some particular point in town. The population of Newberg has reached a point in numbers that makes this step necessary if we propose to keep in line with all the live, up to date towns in the country, and we believe the city council should lose no time in taking the matter up and pushing it. The people want it done and the council should attend to it a t once. In this issue will be found a tribute to the memory of Mr. Wickersham who spent a month -or more in Newberg this tall and who died soon after leaving here. He was known only to a few o f the readers of the Graphic but since we hear o f so much corrup tion these days among men who hold responsible positions, it is indeed refreshing to read o f one, who, through a long life o f use fulness in serving the public, left no dark spots to mar the memo ry o f a well spent life, hence this tribute written by a near friend. There is no such a personage as a non-partisan in politics, ex cept for the getting of votes, and the office seeker who undertakes t o ride the so-called non-partisan h on e earns the contempt o f all honest people. None but simple tons w ill sw allow his dope. A stranger in town Wednesday was sending up a touching wail over the present tendency, as he sees it, to abridge the privileges ot the American cirisen, and he went on to tell how the street car companies first relegated smokers to the front and rear of the ca n and now they are cut ting out smoking in ca n alto gether. Why, he said he went into a car the other day and the conductor wouldn’t even let him hold his lighted cigar in his fin- gen, but made him throw it away. Is it possible? Has it come to this, that the fellow with the smoke habit must ad mit that others than himselfhave some rights in public places that he must respect? Who said this was a free country anyway? Down with this spirit o f Puri tanism! Those having public entertain ments in charge in Newberg are training the people to come late by delaying the beginning of the performances. If an entertain ment is billed to begin at eight o’clock what is the good o f get ting into the habit o f waiting from a quarter to half an hour after the time to begin? As long as this custom prevails the peo ple will go straggling in late as they will have reason to expect a delayed beginning, but if they once learn to expect promptness on the part ot the performers they will be on time. A revival of the habit o f promptness at our public gatherings will be appre ciated by a whole lot o f people who are getting weary of being compelled to w ait for stragglers.
