A Washington correspondent
says the Chicago ticket is the
weightiest ever put out by a na
tional convention in the history
of the country. Secretary Taft
and Jas. S. Sherman would make
the scales register close to 500
pounds, exceeding by nearly 100
pounds the combined weight o f
any ticket ever nominated. Up
to this fime the record was held
by the democrats when they
nominated Cleveland in 1892.
At that time Mr. Cleveland
weighed about 275, while his run
ning mate, Adlaf Stevenson, pulled
down only 150 pounds, making
the total physical weight o f the
team about425 pounds. McKin
ley and Hobart nominated by
the republicans in 1896, made a
pretty heavy team, bat not up
to the democratic record. Presi
dent McKinley weighed about
180 pounds when nominated,
and Vice President Hobart about
200 pounds, giving an aggregate
weight o f about 380 pounds to
the ticket.
