NEW BERQ QRAPHIC. ret thaï I I V U T T H U U O A T MOKNINO W .C .' $1.50 Per Year in Advance. THURSDAY, JUNE 18, 1908. OUT OF WHOLE CLOTH. That « falsehood will travel at ten times the pace o f the truth was again proven the first o f the week when some designing per» sons started the report that those closely identified with the management of Pacific College were laying plans to lower the standard o f the Newberg public school to the eighth grade, at the annual school meeting to be held on Monday afternoon. W ithout b e in g considerate enough to investigate as to toe truth or falsity o f the rumor, tele phones were kept busy carrying the “ scare” throughout the dis trict, and hurried house to house visits were made in order tosa$e the pûblicAchool from dire disas ter at the hands of “ the college.” A sa result the annual school meeting was well attended for once. • • Soon after thé school meeting was called to order, B. C. Miles, w ho is president o f the college board o f trustees, arose and said that this report had come to him a short time before the hour for the meeting and that be had again beard it after arriving on the grounds, but that he would say the report was utterly with ont foundation for such a thing had never been considered or even thought of, and the bubble whs punctured. Some m ay not easily see through the design, while others m ay read between the lines more readily. It was rather surpris ing, however, to note how easily some caught at the bait and helped to pass the thing along, when it is well knowq that' the college has never taken a stand that would interfere in any way with the general interests o f the community. F or Cheap politics o f a low or der the limit was reached in' this instance. we’ve found our n y u let’s keep taka where he »will do the ai0St good. While the anvil chorus is on against the initiative ahd di- rect primary laws, let us remem- her that the former gave us the local option law and the latter gave us Hawley. It is well known that timed are better upon the Pacific Coast than they are east of the Rockies. It is also a fact nncontradicted that conditions are much better financially in Oregon than they are in Washington on the north or California on the south'. Fur ther it is kps widely known but equally true that in (no tow n around bave things been kept moving as they have in Newberg. While others are talking of close times, the inertia o f presidential year, suspended building opera tions, etc., Newberg has been building a big cannery, a fine modernly equipped milk conden- sery, substantial houses are be ing built itr every direction, ce ment walks ate being lakkby the wholesale and the work o f im provement prosecuted steadily. Everybody believes in. Newberg and sees no reason why develop ment should be retarded just be- cadse outsiders come in and in sist that times are hard. Verily it is encouraging to note the zealous interest the good peo ple manifest in matters of public education, as shown in the at tendance at school meeting M on day! But it doesn’t take a faked Up rumor to bring out those who really have the interests o f the public school at heart. They are always on hand. ROYAL FENCE Made by the AMERICAN Steel & Wire Co. “ Alm ost, But L ost’’ The annual basebSH game be tween the college boys and the alumni was played on the col lege diamond Saturday after noon. It w as the tpost even con test o f the kind that has yet tak en place, the college boys having heretofore picked up thé game from the start and run aw ay out o f sight with it. Contrary to history, it w as the college boys ^ h o made the wild throws Sat urday, not a single wild heave being m ate by . the alumni. In the greater part o f the game too, the Alumni had more success in finding the bay with the bat. Huber H aw orth pitchedva g ood game for the latter, and until the last inning held the collegians dow n to the abbreviated end o f a 6 to 2 score. Jhe alumni were correspondingly cheerful and hopeful of breaking their losing hoodoo. But trouble was brew ing and it broke out and run over in the last half o f the last inning when tWe boys began % to find the ball at the right time, coming up from behind with five runs, making the hnal score 7 to 6 in favor o f the college.
