The passage of the bill for the
appropriation for the support o f
the University o f Oregon will in
crease your taxes a little more
than tw o cents if you pay taxes
on $1,000 wort]) o f property,
but all progressive citizens will
be willing to pay this much to
save Oregon from the brand o f a
i “ mossback” state.
Please let Mr. Cake run on his
ow n record, not on the presi
dent’s.—Albany Democrat. But
isn’t Chamberlain claiming to be
a better Roosevelt man than
Cakeor any body else in Oregon,
and is he not trying to boost
himself into the senate through
his declarations for Roosevelt
policies, while at the same time
he is legging for Bryan as a
presidential candidate? When it
comes to political acrobats
Chamberlain ia certainly the
whole show.—Eugene Register.
If Oregon republicans are to
accept the statement o f Cham
berlain that it is just as well or
better to send a democrat to the
senate than to send a republican,
and to sustain him in the conten
tion by voting tor him, then they
m ay as well admit that it is just
as well or better to elect a demo
cratic president than to elect a
republican president. Of course
it is to be expected that a demo
crat v who believes in his p&rty
will take this view o f it bnt the
republican, so called, is no longer
a republican when he takes this
stand and he ought to go over
and train with the other fellows
in order .to be consistent.
Every resident o f Yamhill coun
ty w ho is opposed to the licensed
saloon should at once take it up
on himself to see that voters
are posted on tw o measures
bearing on this subject that will
be voted on at the com ing elec
tion. One o f them is a plain is
sue, for the county alone, be
tween those w ho tavor allowing
'saloon licenses granted in thé
county and those w ho are op
posed to it. The other is a
proposition to allow incorpor
ated tow ns and cities in the state
to have fhll control of the saloon
question regardless o f the vote
outride the corporate limits.
The latter proposition will
appear on the ballot worded
with the vk w of confusing the
voter. Instruct your friends to
vote against both these proposi
tions.

The nniverrity appropriation
which has been held np by peti

at the coming election is a mat
ter that is causing a great deal
o f discussion, but from the trend
o f the newspaper comment it is
evident that there is littk doubt
but that it will be sustained by
the people. Many peopk feel
that it would have been better
to have made the appropriation
