George Stevens, w h o recently turned out of the sloops at the N ew berg Iron W orks a traction engine of his ow n invention, w as prevented from giving it a trial a t practical farm w ork last Saturday by an accident. He started to the country w ith the engine for the purpose of harness ing some plow s to it and giving it a trial in field w ork, when a chain flew off and dropped into tne gearing, m aking a break in the latter that put it out o f com mission for the time being. M r. Stevens is a practical en gineer and has had considerable experience in handling b ig trac tion engines on the large grain Sanches in eastern Oregon and W ashington. He says that since the expense o f operating one o f these b ig machines is something like $50 per day, an expense ac count too large to be considered on the smaller farm s here in the valley, he conceived an idea some time ag o of getting up a smaller and less expensive traction en gine for use on the farm s here and this engine is a product o f his brain. H is engine weighs about 2500 pounds and is propeled by a g as oline m otor of sixteen horse pow er. It has tw o large wheels in the rear but only one in front. It show s much ingenuity in its mechanism and iriw orks well on the ro ad s where it has been tried under adverse circumstances. The accident Saturday w a s un fortunate a a the progress o f the w ork on the machine has been watched w ith a great deal of interest and a trial in field w ork is very much desired, both by M r. Stevens and tne public. M r Stevens has since been called to C orvallis tem porarily and the repairs on the machine w ill be delayed on that account.
