M a yo r Johns, ot Baker City, indicated recently that he was ready to see that the laws against gambling and other vices were enforced when the people made it plain to him that they desired him to take snch action. M ayqr Johns has had aspira tions in the past, to become g o v ernor o t Oregon and it is Ukcly that he w ill seek this high office a t the hands of the people again, but it is safe to say the voA rs w ill .prefer to elect a man who does his sworn duty as an offi- rial without w aiting to be pressed to act by the people. This is a day when there is a de mand for men., for official posi tions who w ill acquaint them selves with the laws o f the land, and, knowing their duty do it like men without hesitancy or equivocation Instead o f wait- ing for demands to be made by an indignant constituency an of ficer o f the la w should hasten to do his sworn duty and exhibit proper moral stamina instead of moral cowardice. A t a recent gathering in New berg a gentleman present sized np the crowd and counted twen ty-one men who were smokers and twenty-seven who were not smokers, and it was a represent ative gathering o f the business men o f our town. From the standpoint o f one who does no smoking except as he is competed to take #t second ¿handed, this i$ a fairly good showing, though it might be made better it is safe to say, without doing injury to anybody. The association has filed its proposed amend ment, having several thousand more names signed than is re quired by law, so it is claimed. I t is a big question and w ill re quire study and careful thought if one desires to vote intelligently on it The main feature seems to be an effort to discourage land monopoly by taxing land valnes *T S j|' / and delays them on the service qf and yet in a short-time after ward Mr. Pulton stood up at a big political love least in Port land and told how he stood in for the direct primary law, all of which goes to show how great men will change front Ofl great questions. Here is an opportunity for some man to make a record and we hope to see men elected to the legislature from Yamhill county who will make a fight to a finish against the little stinker. If we mistake not the Oregoni an was one o f the first papers in the state to advocate a direct -primary law and to make due apologies for seeming discrepen- cies in such a law that was tried in some o f the states several years ago, but the editor o f the big daily is now at such white heat in opposition to the iniative feature of our direct primary law that be is advising vpters to vote against every one o f the fifteen measures that are to be passed upon by the voters at the coming election. Senator Fulton stated ia the presence o f the writer a few years ago that he had point ed out to Mr. Scott his mistake '' ' proved by the masses among ó f an ett* to see men light their cigars or cigarettes in restaurants and smoke in the presence ot ladies, which is only another evidence o f the fact that the sensibilities o f the average smoker, in time becomes so dulled that his smok- ingin public places imposes great discomfort on many people who are forced to visit the same places he visits and breathe the Same tobacco fames that come through his month and nose. All smokers are not entirely unmindful o f the rights o f others, but the unthink in g class is already so large, and in most places is increasing at such a rate, that the man who w ill invent a smoke extinguisher and see that it is attached to all such w ho run at large will en dear himself to a long suffering public. .
