CROZER, A a t Cashier A movement has been inaugu rated throughout the whole the W illam ette Valley for renovation o f the old apple chards without in any m injuring the trees and for purpose of making them profi able as well as healthy, movement is in line w ith the ear nest effort o f Mr. M. O. Lowns- dale o f this county to re-estab» lish the reputation o f the W illa mette Valley apple. This move ment has the backing o f the Ex* periment Station a t Cérvallis and o f the State Board o f H orti culture and w ill be actively pushed by them. The plan which was suggested by Mr. Lownsdale, is to cut the old apple trees down to the ground or within tw o feet o f the ground and allow them to sprout out and grow a year and then top-graft w ith Yellow New- towns. If the tree trunks are sound they m ay be grafted in the latter part o f April of this year by cutting a slit through the bark as is done in bndding. These slits should be ju st where the limbs are wanted and should all be from six to tw elve inches below the point where the tree is sa wed off. Then scions shaved rather long and thin may be slipped through the slit and under the bark as if a bnd were beifig inserted. Abont.tw o buds should be left on the outside o f the scion and the corner o f ¿ach lip of the bark trimmed so it w ill fit close around the scion. The bark lips are then tied down by a string ground the tree trunk and the wound well waxed par ticularly behind the scion. When the grafts have grow n about eight inches the terminals should be pinched o ff t o make them set firmer and to prevent them from being blown out by the winds o f mid-summer. The trees should be cut down w ith a cross-cut saw and care should be taken not to split the remainder of the stump nor loosen its bark. In three or four years these old trees w ill commence to bear again and there w ill be so many o f them producing Yellow New- tow ns th at the whole valley w ill be a big Yellow Newtown or chard and its output w ill be han dled by the Apple Growers’ As sociation that has already been formed. There is no danger of overproduction o f this variety o f apples as there is a great mar ket for them in England and all the old trees of the valley which are now o f no value w ill become a t once o f great consequence to the farp er. H e w ill alw ays be able to sell his output where now he is unable to give it aw ay. It is impossible to thoroughly spray these old trees now but by get- them close to the ground every farmer in Oregon could easily take care o f his orchard and make it the most profitable prop erty on his farm. These suggestions are published at the request o f the StatcBoard o f Horticulture and o f the Wil lamette Valley Apple Gro Association. L a Fayette, Oregon, January 21, 1908 T o the Citizens o f Yamhill: Yam hill is now the banner county o f the W illam ette valley in the production of fruit and nuts. . There is a wide movement all over the valley to better the conditions of orchardists and it we are to maintain our pre-emi nence we must be alert and push with energy the development o f our resources. This is a matter that concerns every businessman in the county; for if orchards be developed along rational busi ness lines the commercial stabili ty o f the community is assured. The movement to make one great orchard bearing a uniform type o f fruit, of the old apple or chards o f the valley is one that should have the constant and earnest support o f every business man as well os every farmer in the county. » The W illam ette Valley Apple Growers’ Association w ill hold a meeting in McMinnville on Sat urday, February 1, at 11 a. m. to discuss and to add informa tion and enthusiasm. I wish every farmer and every business man who can possibly spares few hours time might be present. M 0 . L o w k sd alb . Wanted and For Sale. W anted —M en to clear land and cut cord wood. F. A.
