One o f the earliest signs o f con sum ption is a loss o f strength and flesh, and this should al w a y s arouse suspicion in the case o f a y ou n g m an o r w om a n when there is n o other evident cause for it. In ad d ition t o the gradual em aciation there w ill usually be found a rapid pnlse, shortness o f breath, anem ia, as show n by pale lips and extrem e whiteness o f the eyes, a p o o r a p petite and indigestion. There m ay be feverishness in the after noon, togeth er w ith a hacking cough and som etim es a little spitting o f b lo o d ; bu t this is m ore com m on ly a sign which appears in the later stages. The t w o m ainstays o f the per son threatened w ith , o r actuajly suffering from , consum ption are frish air and a generous diet. In no disease should the injunction t o “ th ro w physic t o the d o g s ” be so faithfully obeyed. I f possible the consum ptive should sleep actually in the open air, on a b a lcon y sheltered from the north and east w inds; but if this can n ot be done, the w in d ow s o f the ljedroom should be kept w ide open a t night and the bed should be so placed that it is bathed in the air entering from w ith ou t. The patients often fear this will give them “ cold s’ o r increase the cough, bu t it does ju st the opposite. Of course the sleeper should be well protected, w ith a h ood in very cold weather, and u w arm sleeping robe, so as n ot t o becom e chilled it the bed e l o t h e a are accidentally dis placed. In another Vessel, slack the balance o f the 1 ime, 30 pounds and add the salt: stir the mixture until the salt is dissolved; add to mixture o f lime and sulphur and boil together for about forty minutes longer, adding enough water to make 60 gallons in all.
