H awley and M r. H uston' are
both regarded as clean, capable
men w ho would be able to repre­
sent Oregon in congress w ith
credit and the Graphic is willing
to let the people make the selec­
tion.
A few papers in the Valley that
«are getting very anxious to have
“ mud slinging” eliminated from
the campaign, will be entitled to
m ore consideration when they
stop giving support to candi­
dates w ho are covered with
mud

and come out and favor men
w ho need no whitewash to cover
the black spots. Maverick, says:
The newspaper or politician who
opens up a campaign with a
whine against mud slinging, and
whimpers around about dirty
politics, simply fears the truth.
A clean square official does not
tremble in his boots tor fear
some newspaper will expose his
official record; no half w ay de­
cent newspaper begins to dodge
or fear to denounce exposures.
These are the methods of men and
papers who are aware ot their
ow n vulnerable points and fear
any vigorous campaign. When
a dishonest man is a candidate
for a public office, it is the duty
of a newspaper to expose him,
and when a paper supports him,
it is the logical conclusion that
it expects to share in his graft.
