If you have the cash, don’t w aste it thjs year on a circus, but go and see the Lew is and Clark exposition, and if you have a family, tak e them along. This is the only opportunity to see such a fair a t home th a t the Ore gonian will have - for years to come. As remarked, a circus comes every year. “ Does a summer vacation p a y ?” This is the question fre quently asked after the outing is over and the humdrum of w ork m ust be resumed. Of course it pays. The delight o f getting home and piling into the bath tu b and of craw ling into an easy bed between clean sheets once more is a complete recompense for a week o f strenuous rest and recreation. I t helps us appreci a te the civilizing agency o f w ater and a good brand o f soap. Governor Hoch preferred the use of w ater for christening the new battleship K an sas, but yielded to the wish o f the n avy officials who insisted on cham pagne. I t would have raised a b ig fuss but we wish the gover nor had lived up to the-tradi tions o f Carrie Nation and defied officialdom. Somebody should ‘ break the senseless custom of splattering intoxicants over the p ro w o f new battleships, and w h o more properly than a K a n sa n ? Considering the nature o f the m ajority o f the attraction s on the T rail, it is nothing less than a tribute to the good sense of our people th at the attendance a t these shows is 4>oor and th at the concessionairries are losing money. And to make up, the T rail has been opened on Sun d a y and that is not bringing the desired business. The fair itself is a grand success, and is being heartily appreciated, but a high- minded and intelligent public h asn ’t much time or money to spend- on the Trail.
