The saloon men o f Portland both wholesalers and retailers, have organized to fight the local option bill. The Telegram quotes them a9 follows: “ The saloonmen are gettin g desperate. The churches are active, and something must be done to offset the effects o f the agitation . It local option car ries it w ill keep them forever busy fighting prohibition, they say, w ith the ultim ate result th a t they would 1>e forced out o f busi- ness. They w ill only lie forced out of business by the local option la w when there are more votes in a community opposed to the sa loon than there arc those in fa vo r of it. And th at is right. It is the proudest boast o f Americans th at this is a country where the people rule. I f they don’t w an t a thing in' their midst it 1 should not lie forced on them. The law s o f the JJoited States and probab ly every individual state, say' th a t the salc>on is a subject t o be controlled or prohibited, and the foeal option lfill merely provides an effective w ay for the people to express their w ill regarding it.
