There is a disease a m on g horses in eastern O regon which is very liable t o spread t o this valley and w h ich has already .caused grea t loss w here it first origin ated. M r. M cL ean, state veterinarian, actin g under orders from the Oregon Dom estic Anim al C om m ission , has qu aran tined a b o u t six hundred head o f horses infected, som e o f which have been sh ot, fo r which the ow n ers can recover n o dam age. T h is m ange has already baen dis covered a m o n g horses in the W illam ette V alley and every ef fo r t is n o w being used t o check it. G reat care should be used th a t ou r o w n sto ck be n o t ex posed fo r the ailm ent is n o t only very co n ta g io u s bu t incurable. T . O, S. F. T . E. O. I. C. It is being p rom oted b y som e ladies scratered o v e r the sta te and has reached the “ reception period ,” enlivened w ith reading “ Lite in B o m b a y ,” and “ brilliant musical num bers.” The society meets in P ortla n d on W ednesday evening, A pril 6th, b u t the da te is unan nounced as t o w hen active w ork w ill begin in India. T his is the second line t o cross Chehalem m ountain, north , and is called the F airview Telephone C om p a n y , and g o e s b y w a y o f C alkins’ , H erd’s, S oper’s and B o w m a n ’s, t o connect w ith S cholls F erry line, w hich w ill g iv e N ew berg direct com m un ica tio n w ith o v e r six hundred m ore telephones, including H illsboro, T igardville an d P ortla n d C ity lim its. N ew berg w ill then have free exchange w ith a b o u t 1 5 0 0 phones, reaching from _ P ortla n d t o D allas an d Sheridan. The plan is s o cheap, an d the benefit t o be derived therefrom s o great, th a t 'n o one can afford t o be w ith o u t a telephone in th is d a y and age. W hen a c o m p a n y ot eigh t o r ten is organized, and brin gs a line in to t o w n , it co sts each m em ber from tw en ty-five t o th irty dollars, including one o f the best phones. Then he has the privilege o f ta lk in g all over the entire m utual system , fo r o n ly tw en ty-five cents . per m onth. Each com p a n y o w n s its o w n line, and each m em ber his o w n phone.
