T he negro, P ark er, who knocked dow n the assassin Czolgosz, im m ediately a fter th e la tte r sh o t P resident M cK in ley, is to be rew arded for his bravery, by being appointed a messenger in the U nited Slated S enate. This is a ju st recognition, especially as th e colored m an has mau lfested a sense of dignity an d propriety in refusing offers to make a show of him self over th e country for m ercenary considerations. C o untry new spaper m en are general ly good subjects for im position in var- lons ways, b n t occasionally tho worm ta rn s. The Jun ctio n C ity 'lim es thus gets back a t one of those gaily E astern m edicine firm s: " A n E astern firm wants u s to advertise and take lit m edi cine for pay. S en ato r P la tt of New Y ork, in vow in g e tern al vongeanco upon W illiam Allen W hite for tho la tte r’s character sketch of th e former in M cClure's m aga zine, is m aking an unnecessary show of him self, though anyone who lias road th e article can n o t wonder at his dia- qnietude. W hite, w ho is ed ito r ol th e E m poria, K ansas, G azette, once e n lightened tho people on “ W h a t’s the m a tte r w ith K ansas" in an editorial th a t m ade him famous, and now by some of Ida relentless character sketches ol some prom inont politicians ho is In dicatin g w hat is tho m atter with somo phases of Amorican politics. A public m an h a s to be a pretty decent sort of a fellow to enjoy reading about him -clf from th e pen of tho gifted K ansas e d i to r. In a symposium of sh o rt readable a r ticles in Sunday's Oregonian, by repre sen tativ e men ol P ortland relative to th e best interests of th e ir city, ono man m akes th e very p ractical suggestion th a t all streets be labeled and ull hom es carefully num bered, holding th a t at presen t It Is extrem ely difficult for the oldest citizen to detoriniue ju st w here h e ’s at, to say n o th in g ol the stranger w ithin th e gates. T his is advice most sensible. Especially does it appeal to - o s denizens o f "The c o u n try ,’’ who Sometlmos m ake sh o rt pilgrim ages to th e metropolis, and who, if our g eograph ical instinct happens to be a t fault, are in danger of not finding our w ay h om e w ard, A nother suggestion w hich m ight n o t be altogether o u t ol place would be th a t a lew more “ cops" m ight bo sp rin k led aroOud th e streets ol Portland very advantageously. I t has often been re m arked by strangers flint these lilue- conted worthies are less in evidence in P ortland th an in an y city ol th e ir ac quaintance. This may bo a trib u te to th e orderliness of our m etropolis, but wo take it th at a polioenum has other duties besides using his club in break ing heads. The poor m an is really up against it in P ortland who Is advized to "te ll his trouble to a policem an.’’ — y *' >f th e straw berry industry than N ew . lierg. H on. K . Holer of Salem, well known as a straw berry enth u siast, lias also had his eye upon th is place as a prom ising field for the culturo ol Un popular herry, and has been giving some attention toward working up interest on the subject here. The G raphic is in re ceipt of a letter from him in which he says it is his intention to hold a m eet ing here especially to em phasize th e straw berry industry which ho says ho believes can be made a big th in g in this section, as much so as at Hood R iver. Ho h I mo enclosed a letter from R. C. Judson, in dustrial agent of th e O. It. & O. V o., who promised to come and help make a success of such a meeting here. Such a spirit of co-operation m anifested, in th e absence of personal interest, is decidedly comm endable and the least the citizens and h o rllcu ltu iists hero can do to show th eir appreciation is to make an effort in lino with the work in which others are endeavoring to help us. In these first days of th e new year, before th e New Y ear’s resolutions have grown cold, it m ay not bo o u t ol place to broaden our perspective a little ; to look around as well as in . The past y ear has been a prosperous one for Nowborg. Now industries have boon opened up, new houses have been built, and th o tow n has enjoyed a steady grow th. H ut last year is a closed book. The question Is, w h a t’s to be done this year to keep N ew berg in th e van? T here are yet other enterprises which we need here and w hich It is believed we can get by means of co-operative energy. T here arc m any people looking for just such a placo as th is for a home, who ought to bo told about Newberg. These facts suggest the need of work to be done by somebody in th o in terests of onr town an d locality. W ho is to do this work? Are you willing to do your share of it? There are generally a few energetic men in a com m unity who are responsible for its developm ent and a d vancem ent. I t becomes too easy for the rest to get in tho h a b it of leaving everything ol public in terest to those few, forgetting how m uch rnoro could ho accom plished with a general, u n a n i mous effort. I t Is in this wuy th a t those w ho renlly have an In terest in tho pro gress of th eir hom e town, gradually bo- como careless and th en indifferent. W hat’s th e m a tte r with sta rtin g in th e New Year w ith a revival in home loyal ty? Suppose each citizen resolve to take a little more responsibility wf local in terests upon his own sh o u ld ers; to speak a good word for his town and neighborhood; to patronize hom o in terests when possible; to give a t least strong m oral support, flavored w ith a little financial aid to new an d progres sive e n te rp rise s; to uphold th e homo instilntions which have been In stru mental In making Newberg wliat it is; in short, to go into the gam e of home enterprise and get into every play which helps to score for homo advance m ent. Such a sp irit as this has m ade Newherg wlmt it is; enough m ore of it will m ake Newberg w h a t wo w ant it to be. c m z u did n o t dream . Nor Is lie alone in liis investigations into th e possibilities of wireless telegraphy. Oilier» are ex p erim en tin g In th e same sphere, and have been, like him , doing it tor years, though he seem* to huve-.progressed farth e r tow ard success th an they, and he lias been able to arrest a larger share of th e w orld’s atten tio n . If it tic prac tical to d ra ft the e th er into m an ’s ser vice as a m edium of com m unication in i every direction and to all lengths, w ith ou t the intervention ol wires—and the young Ita lia n ’s experim ents appear to have rem oved nil ilouht on this point— th e n M arconi will knock th e present elaborate m achinery of ocean and land teleg rap h s as obsolete as Copernicus did tho vast scheme of epicycles of I’tolem y's astronom y, and a new era of m arvels is about to sw ing open to the, world.
