quarters as to whether it is proper to
say the United States “ are” or the
United States "is.” We thought this
momentous question was settled once
lor all iu favor of the latter, over thirty
years ago when the South surrendered
to the prowess of General Grant.

disappointed in losing the opportunity
of extending a hearty hoepitality to the
President and hU party, hut regrets
more the sad circumstance which pre­
vents the extension of the President’s
tour. I t is the fervent hope of all that

The Oregonian h s the representative
newspaper pf the Northwest shows up in
very poor light, iu devoting over a half
column leading editorial to being
grouchy and splenetio because President
McKinley allowed his wife to interfere
with bis tour. In times of such trial aa
our President is now undergoing, silence
at least might have been expected, if a
word of sympathy could not have been
conscientiously given. Oregon has cause
to blush for the boorlshness of Its big
daily.
The Indianapolis News give* the fol­
lowing reasons for the desertion of the
farm by young men t “ The drift of rural
population to cities lias long been «char­
acteristic of recent times. Kvery census
in recent yean both In this country and
in Europe has shown tho vastly greater
growth of cities as compared with rural
regiona. If there were wider intelligence
among farmers iu feeding the ambition
of the young; if they were to give their
children something that they could call
their own, a share in ownership that
thoy might improve by Industry, some­
thing that would stimulate ambition
aud awaken pride, there would iu all
likelihood be less discontent with coun­
try life and lesa of longing for the un­
tried and unknown life of the city.”
President H. E. McGrew who has
been on a trip East for the past four
months working in the Interests of Pa­
cific College arrived home on Tuesday
evening, bringing with him his mother
whose home is at LeGraud, Iowa. Mrs.
McGrew and little daughter Marion
met them in Portland and they nil came
out on tlie evening tralu together, a very
happy family. They weie met at the
station by the students and many of the
citizens who gave them a royal welcome.
At eight o’clock a public reception was
held in the college chapel where an hour
was spent in handshaking and having a
general good time. Prof. Morrison and
Jesse Edwards spoke some cheering
words of welcome which were respond­
ed to in a happy vein by Pres. McGrew.
Others followed with brief remarks
which were interspersed with vigorous
college yells. The president was well
received wherever he went sod was so
successful in his mission that it only re­
mains for the people of Newberg and ad-'
jacent territory to respond liberally to
the call for donations to the home sub­
scription list and the debt on Pacific
College will be wiped out.
Of the $6,000 necessary to be raised in
Oregon in order to put Pacific College
out of debt there yet remains to be sub­
scribed about (2,500 aud six weeks still
remain in which to make the canvass.
The wholo amount must be forthcoming
or all the work is lost aa the subscrip­
tions have been taken on the one condi­
tion that the whole amount shall be
raised. A part of the amount is in
sight but those who have the matter in
hand realize that it is going to require a
vigorous canvass to accomplish the end,
hut preparations are being made for
pushing p canvass to a finish. It will be
undertaken however with the full belief
that the people will respond liberally
and if necessary make some sacrifices in
order to make success certain. An in­
vitation is extended to the people to
think the matter over seriously and he
prepared to meet the solicitors cheer­
fully and with liberal donations.
