A p ro m inent American just returned from th at island gives th e following testimony along this line: “ To one who was in Cuba two years ago one thin g is very clear, and th a t is th a t there is a general uplift in every direction and the people in nearly every part of the island have liecoine practically self-sustaining and independent of outside assistance. Words can hardly picture the condition which existed two years ago. E verything in dustrial was paralyzed. People hung about the streets and highways with a dull and sodden look, as if there was no chance of things being worse and little hope for their being better. Every where were disease, death, poverty, filth and despair. The changes wrought in the lust two years world appear incred ible to one no’ having an opportunity to judge by contrast. They speak vol umes for Uncle Ham’s administration of affairs, and excite surpriso at th e won derful power of recuperation which ex ists in Cuban soil. So far ns external evidences go there appears to lie a gen eral movem ent in town and country which promises much for the future. This view is plausible and in a measure serves tpe purpose intended, o( “ putting the churches in a hole,” but it is ignor- . . T norant, dishonest and false ‘ V. . rant because it fails to see th a t tbe men wbo have discarded the old t h e ological conceptions are impelled solely try a wish to get closer to the teachings of Jesus. It ia dishonest because ft im putes to these men tbe base desire to overthrow Christianity, when their a r d en t hope is th a t they may so present it as to tiring ail men to acknowledge its tru th and beauty freed from th e accre tions of tradition and opinion. And it is false because no theological setting of Christianity, whether Greek, Roman or Protestant, is necessarily divine or final, and may therefore lie modified or reject ed ill part without implying any reject ion of Christianity itself. The whole history of Christianity, indeed, from the very lieginning is a record of such molli fications and rejections, and only thus has the church been able to deliver its message to tbe world. If tbe revival method !a no longer potent, it ia not be cause Christianity is dead or dying. I t would be just as sensible to infer the death of Christianity because the love feast and th e kiss of |ieuce of the Apos tolic churcii are discontinued. The real message of Christianity is as convincing and powerful as It ever was. And if the church finds th at certain methods of de livering it, once effective, are no longer so, the wise and sensible thing to do is to devise some other method th a t will be effective.—N. Y .
