NEVŸBERG GRAPHIC,
An eastern paper in reviewing the
colossal gilts made to educational insti-
tut ions of 'he United States in the past
year, dwells upon the vast sums given
to leading universities such as Chicago,
Washington, Brown, Clark, Yale, Har­
vard and Columbia by millionaries, the
total sum aggregating about $3.3,000,000.
Such munificent giving to such institu­
tions is laudable certainly, but not de­
serving of the highest praise. Ttie mo­
tive is not always an unselfish one by
any means, and often princely institu­
tions are founded more to serve os a
monument to a name than for the noble
ends they may serve. To us, there is a
far better example in the unselfish giv­
ing of such a man as Dr. Pearson ot
Chicago. His wealth, instead of flow­
ing into the maelstrom of some univer­
sity, goes where it is most needed, and
beat used—to the small colleges all over
the country. Ten thousand dollars to a
small, but deserving college is product­
ive of as much good as a million to some
universities, and is appreciated far more.
A gift to the big university enables a
few to become specialists In certain di­
rections, while a gift to the small col­
leges enables the many to awake to a
better realization of life—to breathe in a
wider atmosphere. As a result, while
the name of Rockefeller will be honored,
the name of Dr. Pearson will bo revered.
