T h e Vesuvius was built by Cramps at Philadelphia In 1880 and was accept ed by the government and placed lu commission four years later. Its ar mament consists o f three pneumatic guns, which are in the forw ard part of the vessel. The guns are built into the vessel, which acts us a m ovable gun carriage. Th eir muzzles are carried fo r ward and project above the deck, m a r the 1 k ) w , at an elevation o f 18 degrees. T h ey arc made o f thin east Iron, are 15 Inches In diameter, nad are 54 feet long T hey are not rifled, the vanes upon t.he projectile being relied npou to g iv e tlio desired axial rotation. The full-sized shells fo r the guns are 14% Inches lu diam eter and about 7 feet long. A tall is fitted at the end o f the shell with spiral vanes, which secures Its align ment and rotation. They are designed to carry a charge o f 150 to 200 pounds o f dynam ite or guncotton, and the e f fe ct o f the latter charge the results at Santiago attest. Experts say that if one o f these giant shells exploded w ith in tw en ty feet o f an armored vessel, a largo section o f the hull would disap pear. T h e shells are hurled from the guns by compressed air and so pow erfu l Is tills force that they can be sent with accuracy a distance o f tw o and a half miles. The air is compressed into res ervoirs containing a large number of wrought iron tube*. Each shot that Is fired at a mile range takes 150 pounds o f air. T h e guns are loaded and bandied w ith ease.
