T ., May 18.— A south- hound passenger tra in on th e S anta Fe road, known as th e Chicago and G alves ton express, w ent through a trestle six teen m iles south of here at fi o ’clock this m orning. F ifteen persons, pas sengers and train m en , were injured. Several of these are seriously h u rt, and it is believed th a t two w ill die. The accident occurred near the town of M arietta. A heavy rainstorm , am ounting alm ost to a w aterspout, caused a sudden rise th is m orning of all th e sm all stream s in th a t vicinity. T he accident occurred at a point w here a steep, narrow gulch was spanned by a wooden trestle. The foundation work supporting th is trestle w as u n derm ined by th e sudden rise of the little stream which flows through th e gulch, and th e trestle w en t down under the heavy w eight of th e train . So great was th e speed of th e tra in , how ever, th a t th e engine and tender, th e ex press, m ail and baggage cars and one passenger coach passed over th e narrow chasm , though th e trucks of several ol these cars went to th e bottom , several feet below. The coach next to the last, th e one im m ediately in front oi th e P ullm an, was left standing directly over the chasm , one end resting on e ith e r bank of th e gulch. The P ullm an rem ained on th e track. The foui coaches w hich w ere dragged by the lo comotive across th e broken tre stle were badly wrecked. T he baggage car tele scoped w ith th e passenger coach, w hich was th e smoker, and th e latter w as all but dem oralized. Most of th e injured were riding in these coaches. J . M. G rider, th e W ells-Fargo ex press messenger, w as so badly crushed b y 'a heavy car chest, th a t he cannot live. E. T. Sparks, of O akm an, I.
