From this wo concluded that those who have been urging the G r a p h ic to advocate water works are not well posted as to what the people want, for it is sale to conclude the people are not very anxious to have a thing if they are never hoard to say anything about it. All right, we have a eplended well of water at our house for domestic purposes, and it is sure to rain enough next winter to Jay all the dust that is being manu factured this summer. The cool, murky weather has caused the hop lice to develop more rapidly and greater fears than have heretofore existed now exist relative to the probable securi ty of a goo I crop. The weather is favor able to the second growth of clover and a fair crop will l>e secured. The cool weather keeps the corn from going into tassel, thus helping the oars to form. Continued cool temperature has pre vailed, the nights l>eing especially cool, while during the day the temperature ranged from 70 to 80 degrees. There has been more than the usual amount of part- ly cloudy weather, and on the 21, 22 and 20, occasional showers occurred. The winds have been light in velocity and not so dry. There has not been sufficient rain to benefit the crops, as was desired, yet the other conditions were favorable to the growing crops. Harvesting of winter wheat and oats is in full blast through the Columbia river valley. Wheat is turning out from 70 to 8 ) per cent of the average except in a few localities where it is not over from 50 to 63 per cent of the average. The best yields aro in the east ern portion cf Umatilla county. In Union and Wallowa counties the present appearance of the wheat crop indicates 80 per cent of an average crop. In liaker, Malheur and the interior counties the cool weather lias considerably retarded development of vegetation and haying is just beginning. While the farmers aro not enthusiastic over their crops, yet the majority of them are not despondent. 1!. S. I’ aoue , Observer. P r e s id e n t .
