m 3 T 0 «lE S 2j% Difference Whether any other baking powder is equal to “ Royal,” let the official reports decide. When the different powders were purchased on the open market and examined by Prof. Chandler, of the N ew -York Board of I lealth, the result showed that Royal Baking Powder contained twenty-seven per cent, greater strength than any other brand. When compared in money value, this difference would be as follows: If one pound of Royal Baking Powder sells for 50 cents, One pound of no other powder is worth over 36 cents. If another baking powder is forced upon you by the grocer in place of the Royal, see that you are charged the correspondingly lower price. RESEARCHES ON SNAKE POISONS. P e r il I la r i t ie * o f the V en om o f SiTpen tx. flo w Death Is Caused, j The Smithsonian institution bus pub- ■ lisluxl Dr. Mitchell's and Professor Ileich- ! e rt’H researches on snako poisons. The | Boston Medical and Surgical Journal says I o f tho work; “ The new researches have been executed with ho great skill, the re sults are so imj>ortant, and tho presenta tion o f the whole matter is so excellent, that the memoir must at once I xj ranked a classic.” W o give a few of tho results: No chemical «inference can be detected in tho poison of all known snakes. The poison resembles in some resp-ots the saliva of other animals, ami differs but little from normal elements of tho blood. Introduced within the living tissues, it produces distinctive changes more rapidly than any other known suiistane«», am lyet it is harmless within its own tissues. Here in, as The Journal suggests, it resembles ! the gastric juice, which digests ail sub stances except that of the stomach itself. Liko most other prisonous suInstances, it is associated with more or less innocu ous matter, from which tho active princi ple can lx* separated by chemical analysis and obtained pure. It has generally been supposed that tho malignant eif«*ct o f tin* prison was duo to an intense inflammation to which it gave rise. But in inflammation it is principally the white corpuscle« that escape from tho blood vessels, while snake poison causes the blood t«> exude unseparated. In the former case, also, the hlood strongly coagulate«; in the latter, it retains its fluidity. The red blood globule, in its normal form, is biconcave, or hollowed out on both sides; tho poison renders it round, softens it, and causes the globules to inn together like a gelatinous mass. Tho tissues become black with the infiltrated blood, break down, and rapidly putrify and slough. It is probable that in most cases death results from tho paralysis of tho respira tory centers—those parts of the brain that preside over the acts of respiration. The hush men of South Africa use as an antidote the pordered poison sac of a different sp»cies of snake; some, a small lizard, dried, powd«*red and nibbed into incisions around the bite. Observations of travelers seem to confirm the efficacy of these antidote«.— Youth’s Companion. Queer T iling* In C'tilnu. Season lorTrtut Opens ip rllst. WtiHt Some of Them 1* m »<1 to Do.
