I ATTACKED BY A COUGAR. A H u n ter’« D esp era te F igh t In th e .South ern O regon M ountains. Poison in the Kitchen. N o article entering so generally into the food o f every household is so generally and villainously adultered as bak ing powder. These adulterated powders are shoved upon the public with the greatest persistency. T h robb in g advertisem ents in newspapers claim ing this brand or that is absolutely pure, backed b y analyses and cer tificates, and yet they are adulterated with ammonia or alum. It is to be hoped the law will take hold of these merciless manufacturers and punish them for destroying the stomachs o f the unsuspecting consumer. A m id all this fraud and deceit Dr. Price’s Cream Bak in g Pow der stands almost alone battling for pure food and continues to furnish a pure cream of tartar powder at almost the same cost to the people as the ammoina and alum pow ders are sold at, yet it costs much more to manufacture. Dr. P rice’s Cream Baking Powder is o f the highest strength. It produces the largest amount o f leavening power attainable in a pure baking powder. It is free from ammo nia or any other adulteration. N o pow der does such work. H ousew ives who have tested all use Dr. Prices only. BARNUM’S LITTLE JOKE. Bucoda is the name of a town in Washing ton. The origin of its name is of a some what curious nature. However, it arises from civilized sources. It may puzzle some of the commentators when they endeavor to search for its origin. You might search all the foreign languages in the world, and still not be able to discover it. This is how it was christened: There were three great railroad men in that portion of the country where the town is now, and their names were Buck ley, Coulter and Davis. Each of them wished the town to be named after himself But they could not come to an agreement, and finally, as a compromise, the two first letters from each name were taken and placed together, and thereby originated Bu-co-da. — Salem (Ore.) The farmhouse* was coay and sweet as could be. The green fields and orchards were pleasant to see— Then why, do you think, was the farmer so glum! His good wife looked out, saying, “ Why does he stand Like a stock o r a stone, with the hoe In his hand. When it’s supper time, quite, and the cows haven’t com e?” The farmer stood thinking, “There’« nobody knows The life a poor farmer is led by the crows It’s m uch if they leave me a morsel to eat. Virus o f Indian Snakes. A com m u nication con cerning tiie physiological action o f tlio poison of the venom ous snakes o f India, pre sented to the Royal society, is a paper o f exceptional interest. It contains an a ccou n t o f num erous experim ents made upon small birds, cuts, dogs, fowls, frogs, guinea pigs, pigeons and rabbits, with the virus o f the cob ra and that of the alm ost equally deadly viperine snake know n as the daboia. These ex pertinents were m ade in Kngland, with poison sent thither from Bengal in a gum like con dition, w hich preserves its potency. T h e idea that the venom is effective on ly when con veyed into the system through the b lood is a m istake, it also acts when introduced hy means o f th e stom ach, although it is not then so certainly fatal. W h en carried directly to the heart, ns hy the ju gu lar vein, the poison ar rests its action and causes alm ost in stantaneous death. Death is more com m oldy produced, how ever, hy the par aly/.ing effect o f the poison upon the m uscular apparatus, and the cotisa qu en t ch eck o f respiration. It is a re m arkable fact that while this snake poison acts injuriously upon so many form s o f anim al life, and to som e ex tent even upon plant life, it is practically harmless as aguiast ven om ou s snukes themselves.
