The hook is richly illus trated with over 10.) of tlio grandest and most wonderful engravings which have ever appeared in a work of this kind. Superh character delineation, magnificent ami realistic illuminated plates printed in oil colors, valuable Bible references, to gether with a life of the famous author and the beautiful poem ’ ‘ The Little P il grim ,” make this great memorial edition one which will be eagerly sought after by all. It offers the book agent an uuequall- ed opportunity for a rich harvest. The History Company of San Francisco are the publishers, and their advertise ment will he lonnd in another column. B u siness pluck is necessary for the de- V'dopeincnt of the resources of any com munity. It niukcs little difference how advantageously any point is situated, if those interested in its growth do not e x ercise onterpi ise and en ergy the town w ill die and allow other cities to real) the advantages which it naturally possesses. The above from the Corvallis Gazette fully applies to every town in this state and Is as true as gospel. lint the great trouble w ith towns and localities, w hich have fallen behind in the race of progress and development, lies in their having no systematized efforts. The more progres sive and prosperous towns have learned this secret and liuvo organized Hoards of Trade, Trade Unions, lluihling ami Loan Associations, the fruits of which are prog ress.— HTownsville Times. All of the above is very tine, but we would also add that good natural advan tages go a long wav toward making a prosperous town ami community. It is true that many places have been boomed and forced ahead for a time that had nothing of a stable character to boast oi, hut a place to make a steady, permanent growth must have something lin k of it beside w ind. Our town is very favorably situated in many respects. W e are just the proper distance from Portland, the metropolis of Ihe north-west, and wo gel the Umeiit of the river and railraod w liicli gives us competing lines for shipping grain and other freight to market. And while we ure near ihe river, high watei never touches us, while other towns in the country uro often greatly injured by Hoods. A s a fruit country it is a conced ed fact that wo have a location that is un surpassed in the Willamette valley. Our town already lias an enviable reputation as a place of splendid educational advan tages w here young (Mople can he placed in school ami lie away from the immoral and debasing mHneiiees that abound in so many places. W illi all these natural ad vantages, Newberg w ith a long pull and a strong pull, ami a pull altogether ought lo make and will make a good business cen ter. See saw work never did a town any good ami the less we have of it the lietter. A thoroughly reliable gentleman in forms a corn-«[Maident that lie saw near Scottsville, \'a., two small snakes delib erately engaged in swallowing eaeli other, a goodly |>or!ioii of each having been ta ken into tiie stomach of the other. This reminds us of the old farmer who saw a large htiil-fiog basking in the sun on the hunk of his mill pond. A large water moccasin commenced to swallow his frog- ship by taking in his legs. Meanwhile the frog began the same process hy taking in the tail of the snake. The swallowing process, 11ic story goes, continued until the reptile and the fiog swallowed each other and both disappeared from view. — Dispatch. d l B R O S , HEADQUARTERS FOR .WAGONS, HACKS, BUGGIES and CARTS, S H O V E L F L O W S * C U L T IV A T O R S Ac.
