QO E/IST Ed Nolan, who served a term of 20 years in San Quentin, was captured near Bailard, Wash., and is now held in jail at Seattle subject to charges of piracy and burglary. His companion was “Shorty” Wilcox, a notorious San Fran cisco water-front thief. Wilcox made a daring escape by plunging into a sort of marsh. In a blind garret, where Nolan aud Wilcox lived, were found the ac cumulations of several burglaries which have hitherto baffled the Seattle police. Nolan is charged with piracy on Puget sound. j The thriving town of Sydney, Cape Breton, was almost swept out of exist ence by fire, which is supposed to have been started by the bursting of an oil stove. The loss is roughly estimated at about $500,000, not more than half of which is covered by insurance. VALLET RECORD. The People’s Paper. ASHLAND. OR., Thursday, Oct. 31. 1901 Presbyterians and the Constitution. James Jackson of Cambridge, Mass., who was suspended from membership in the Second Reformed Presbyterian Church because, on becoming an Amer ican citizen, he took the oath to uphold the constitution of the United States, proposes to fight the ruling. Dr. Jackson is a Scotchman by birth, but now, after ten years here, he has takeq out natur alization papers. Rev. J. M. Henry E. Cooper, territorial secretary of Hawaii, has discussed with Secretary of Agriculture Wilson the conditions of the territory. Mr. Cooper says the labor problem is a serious one. The natives are dying off rapidly, the mor tality being about 40 deaths to the 1,000, and foreign laborers are gettiug out of the country much more rapidly than they are coming in. The encour agement of Chinese labor, he said, is regarded as the most promising solu tion, and the territorial government is desirous that large numbers of laborers shall come in from China. The natives generally, said Mr. Cooper, will not wok. Do you stiffer from piles? If so do not turn to surgery for relief. A feeling hostile to foreigners exists in many parts of northern China, and local disturbances may be expected. In much the same spirit The Satur day Review of London remarks that ‘‘the Chinese question has been settled by leaving everything of real impor tance unsettled,” and The Spectator says, “When the next catastrophe oc curs, which should be in about three years—that is, In 1904, when the first installment of the indemnity falls due —it will probably be found that the le gations are in as deep a fog as they wero when Bishop Favier for the first time shook their previously immovable optimism.” Meanwhile Count von Waldersee is being lauded and decorated b'y the em peror of Germany for his “feat” in Chi na, and the Russian government has conferred upon him highest honors. A dispatch to the New York Sun from Baltimore says: One of the most wonderful cures effected of late at the Johns Hopkins hospital is that of Wil liam Clancy, who was literally disem boweled with a bowieknife several months ago. In the broiling sun he was brought in a rough wagon to the hospital, a distance of nine miles. On arriving at the hospital the physioians expressed the opinion that he could not live. His intestines were found to have come out through the wound, and part of them were covered with dirt. Clancy showed marvelous vitality, and recov ered sufficiently to sit up. Recently an obstruction was found in his intes tines, and the wound had to be opened again and the trouble rectified, bnt Clancy again came out of the operation successfully, and is now on the road to complete recovery.
