It would be difficult to eouceive of a more absv.vd jumble of statements. In the Cri t plitc e, Mr. Carlisle cannot show that we have $600,000,000 of gold in the country. Hut se there is in the country today the ¡.mount estimated by Mr. Car- li.'lo. V> ill it disappear from circulation under free co'nago? This is only possi ble cn the tuppusitiou that gold will go to a prcuiir.m, and even if gold gees to a premium it will be used, notwith standing tho premium, and to that ex tent take tho place of other kinds of money. Thoso who hold gold will be compelled to me it or clso lose tho in terest upon it, and to lose the interest up ,.i it ir a penalty which tho holders of gold will not long pay. But if geld di; appears 1 cause silver becomes cheap er and take ; its place then gold will re appear whenever the scarcity of money makes the silver as dear as the gold. Tho gold which we have cannot leave us until the holdors of it exchange it for something which they desire more than they do tho gold. Bnt let me call your attention to the statement that it would require 15 years to coin enough silver to take the place of the gold. The answer to that proposi tion is very simple. If our mints will not coin silver fast enough to supply the demand, we can make more mints, and until the mints aro sufficient for all re quirements we can issue silver certifi cates and deposit the bullion to be coined in the mints when the mints are suffi cient, so that there is nothing in the proposition of Mr. Carlisle to scare the people.—Cincinnati Speech of Hon.
