Washington proved in his correspond­
ence and public utterances that he
possessed a wonderful foresight of the in­
fluences which would result from a free
influx of foreigners. In writing to John
Adams lie said :
“My opinion with respect to emigra­
tion is, that except of useful mechanics,
and some particular descriptions of tnen
or professions, there is no need of en­
couragement, while the policy or advant­
age of its taking place in a body (I mean
the settling of them in a body) may be
questioned; for bv so doing they retain
the language, habits, and principles
¡good or bad) which thev bring with
them. Whereas, by an intermixture
with our people, they or their descend­
ants get assimilated to our customs,
measures ami laws—in a word, soon be­
come one people.”
If our immediate ancestors had had
the sense and patriotism to follow Wash­
ington’s ideas, we would not have a
horde of Chinese, Italians, Poles, Portu­
gese, Japanese, Hungarians and Rus­
sians in this country now to compete
with and degrade our native labor.
