Stacks of Buch Docamenta in Somerset
Boose—The Firs* Mill and Awful Fate
of Ito Maker.
Such phrases were not, we imagine, likely
to make Baron Maule's court unmanageable,
or to let counsel get out cf hand. Surely it
is absurd to »ay that the exercise of such wit
must be condemned, because we protest
»gainst the wse of an ill timed, ill judged and
jaunty jocularity. The one need never for a
moment lower the tone of th* court. The
other, “easy, vulgar, aid therefore disgust
ing,” is sure to end in a loss of dignity and
respect.
Again, the judge who reminded an advo
cate in the following manner that he was
wasting the time of the court did no violence
to decorum. The barrister had been explar»-
ing at great len'Jh certain tr^.sactions in
regard to a furnished bouse. Having dealt
with the bouse in a long and dreary oration
utterly beri le the point, he coughed aud be
gan: “And now, my lord, I propose to ad
dress myself to the furniture.” “You have
not been addressing yourself to anything else
for the last hour and a half,” was the reply.
Here, though counsel could hardly have felt
comfortable, the court suffered no loss of re
spect.
Indeed, under certain circumstances, a
judge may find In bis wit the means of bring
ing clearly home to the public mind the ill
results of any portion of our legal system
which he considers imperfect.
Baron Maule had once to sentence a man
tried before him in a case of bigamy, in
which it appeared that though the crime had
actually been committed, there were very
great excuses for the prisoner. His wife had
been drunken and unfaithful and, leaving
him with a large family of children to bring
up, had disappeared for several years. Under
such circumstances he had thought himself
able to marry again. In giving sentence
Baron Ma'ile in detail stated how the prison
er ought to hare acted, how he should have
brought ono action for crim. con. in the
civil courts and another in the ecclesiastical
coil* for a divorce, and, finally, how he
should have obtained a private act of par
liament dissolving the first marriage and al
lowing him to contract a second. " |jou will
probably reply,” ended Baron Maule, "that
this would have cost you £1,000 and that you
have not a thousand pence. But let me tell
you, prisoner at the bar, that this is no ex
cuse, and that in England the law is the same
for the poor as for the rich.”
As may be deduced, this passage led up to
a sentence of three days’ imprisonment,
to begin from the first day of the assizes, and
therefore, in this case at least, the prisoner
had something beyond “his judge's joke for
consolation.”—The Spectator.

BLOOD FEUD.
How One Family Incarred th* Deathly
Enmity of Another.
Being in confidential mood, my host tells
me about his family and his children, and
that he has a blood feud with one of the most
powerful families of the neighboring Hotti
tribe, and so never goes out of the village
alone for fear he should be shot for the blood
be owes his enemies. His sister, he explains,
married a man of Hotti, and it was consid
ered a splendid match, as that tribe is the
most powerful in the great mountains and
takes the post of honor in time of war.
About a year after tbe marriage the bus-
tiand repudiated his bride and sent her home,
giving no reason for the outrage, but merely
saying he was not going to keep the woman
any longer Such an insult was not to be
tolerated, so my host and his brother, seeing
that there w as no chance of obtaining for
their sister the restitution of her rights,
looked out for an opportunity of killing their
brother-in-law.
"He was very cunning,” says my host re
flectively, playing with his pistol; "but 1
waited for him every day, and at last I
caught him alone, and then 1 shot him for the
slight be had dared to put on our family.”
“And so you owe them blood?”
He grins aud arranges his pistols in his
leather sila “His father and brothers,” he
replies, “often come into our country to look
for me, and wait for me outside the bazar or
on the road to Scodra, but 1 never go into the
city without my brother and my relatious, so
they canuot exact the penalty without light
ing a battle.”
“But surely that must be a great nuisance
for you?”
He shrugs his shoulders: “Some day they
will catch me alone, as 1 caught bun, and then
they will shoot me if they can."
“And your sister?”
"She is in the city."
“Has she married again?”
“Married? Oh, no! She begs; she lias her
child.” Then seoing my look of astonishment
he adds: “What is she to do? We cannot
support her; she does not belong to us now,
and tho Hotti will not keep her. But I have
aveuged the insult; I have shot her husband.”
Truly, honor and dishonor are arbitrary-
words! My companion is, according to bis
own code, a man of strict honor. His sister
has been repudiated by her busband without
cause or reason, and he feels that he has done
everything he can be expected to do when be
