Selection o f eleven delegates to attend the Oregon-Idaho Develop ment Congress at Marshfield on August 20 and 21 , was the most important feature of the regular meeting of the Roseburg Commerial Club Monday night. These dele gates are: W . L. Cobb, J. H. Booth, T- R. Sheridian, O. P. Co show, A . N. Orcutt, Ed. Andrews, R oy McClallen, G. V. Wimberly, Jos. Micelli, N. Rice, Geo. Neuner, Jr. While this Congress will discuss several matters of interest to the two states concerned, the feature of prime importance will be the best plans for furthering the early con struction of the Coos Bay to Boise Railroad. The Roseburg delegation will co-operate with the Coos Bay people in the development o f this important project and assure them that Roseburg and Douglas county will give every possible assistance for its early consummation. Development of the boundless natural resources o f this portion of Oregon is seriously retarded by lack of a direct means of transportation bitween the Interior and the coast and the building of a railroad is the only means to relieve this condition. It is now generally realized that the starting o f the Drain road two or three years ago was a colossal bluff to “ kill off” a road between here and Coos Bay. That “ bluff” finally accomplished its purpose and work on the Drain road stop ped. As soon as another railroad to Coos Bay is started, the Drain road will doubtless be pushed on through, and not before. The peo pie back of the Coos Bay to Boise project fully realize this and when once started the building of this road will go right ahead, regardless of whether Mr. Harriman completes his line from Drain to Coos Bay or not. W e would like to see both roads built and the present indica tions are, said to be very favorable. — Review. A r t Johnson Suicides. On Friday evening, shortly after 9 o’clock Rector Artemus Johnson, of Marshfield, was found dead on the long bridge on Commercial Avenue in that city, with evidences of suicide surrounding the body. However, there are certain circum stances which would lead one to thins that there might have been foul play. The deceased had been in bad health for three years past, and some are inclined to think that the cause of the rash act The weapon with which the deed was done lay near the body and was identified by a brother of the de ceased as his own pistol which he had left at the home of bis brother, and which it was supposed the deceased carried as a protection, claiming that two attempts at hold up upon him along this bridge of late had been made, and from the fact that the watch he was known to be carrying in the afternoon was gone, and a piece o f the chain yet attached to his vest, leads to the murder theory. One shell had been fired in the revolver, and some claim two shots were fired. ---------- a i | m ------• The D istrict Fair. C IT A T IO N . A S ad A ccid o n t. Uncle Thoa. Smith came up from Riverton Monday, and told us of the drowning of the husband of his grand daughter, formerly Miss Lydia Livesev, who lived ill Ibis city for several years when a girl, and who is now Mrs. Clevenger, of Clackamas county. Mr. and Mrs C levm ger had started for the min eral s priugs on horse back, and when they came to the Clackamas river they missed tne ford and un dertook to cross the river on horse back at a trccherous place, and both were thrown from their saddles, and Mr. Clevenger being sick and weak, could not help himself, and was drowned. Mrs. Clovenger suc ceeded in catching bold of the pack- horse whioh was tied to the animal she was riding, and held on for a short distance but soon lost her hold and was thrown under the water, but again reached the sur* face as a colt which followed came swimming by and she grasped it’s mane and again reached her saddle animal which took her ashore, but, of course, she was unable to do any thing for Mr. Clevenger. This oc. curred at 2 p. m. on Wednesday the 4th inst, and at a point 8 miles from a settlement, where Mrs. Clevenger remained till the follow ing day when word was sent to Portland and help came and the body of her husband was recovered on Friday following and was buried on Saturday at Portland. Her many friends in this section will sympathize with Mrs. Clevenger in her great loss and fearful experi ence. B ase B a ll A g re e m e n t.
