Coquille Herald. WEDNESDAY, JAN. « , 1909. Legislative Session to Begin, The regular bienuial session of the Oregon Legislature will con. vene at Salem next Monday. Al ready the Solons arc beginning to assemble at tbe capital, and next comes tbe fight for control of tbe two bouses between anti and pro- Statement men. Tbe Statement members, it is believed, will succeed in capturing tbe organization. That Chamberlain will be the choice for United States Senator, and on tbe first ballot, seems prac tically certain. His opponents, in fact— those who would defeat the people’s will and have pledged mem bers violate their solemn pledge— have abandoned their best hopes of success. Even Senator Fulton is credited with tbe statement that “ it is useless to try longer for tbe de feat of Governor Chamberlain.” He is discouraged— bis spirit broken by the refusal of Roosevelt and Taft to enlist their aid for his re- electic There will be some important leg islation of a general nature to con sider at this session, much of which will be outlined and recommended in the Governor’s message. Among the measures that should be passed is the one to increaso the bounty on panthers, coyotes, wildcats, and oth er destructive animals so numerous and multiplying in the State at pres ent. Some of these varmints are as destructive of deer as they are of sheep and other stock. There should also be better protection for elk. Senator-elect Chase of Coquille started for Salem via Coos bay Mon day. That evening he met with tbe North Bend Chamber of Commerce to discuss some proposed legislation affecting Coos bay harbor. Repre sentative-elect R. E. L. Bedillion is reported to be sick in San Francis co, but will be able to travel from that city to Salem by rail. ------------- Orvil Dodge Has Hopes. Our fellow townsman, E. H. Kern, is in receipt of tbe following letter from Orvil Dodge, dated Washing ton, D. C., Dec. 27th: “ I am much encouraged in believ ing that my mission here will be successful. At least I believe we shall get an appropriation to bring the dredge ‘Oregon’ to the Coquille and operate it. We have succeeded in getting the Chief Engineer’s rec ommendation for it. Congress is on holiday vacation now, so matters in our line are dull. In fact overyone is on pleasure bound, but Mr. Her mann and myself are seeking every opportunity to adyanco our cause. You may give these facts to the City Council and Chamber of Com merce if you wish.’ ’ • <• » • A movement has been set on foot by the people of Cottage Grove to form a new county with that city as the county scat. It is proposed that the liue should cross the Mid dle Fork of the McKenzie, run near Goshen and thence west to the preseut boundary -xtf the county. Ib is would leave the Blue River mining country in Lane, while the present Bohemia district, in both Lane and Douglas, would be in cluded within the boundaries of the new county. From the Bohemia district in Douglas the lino would run west to the coast and include within the limits of the proposed Bohemia county the towns of Yon- calla, Drain and Gardiner, all of which are at present in Douglas county. City Council M eet«. The Common Council was in reg ular monthly session Monday even ing, and disposed of tbe usual busi ness, such as claim-paying, etc. Baxter Bros, were granted a re newal of their liquor license, as wtre Baxter A Howell a week previous. A resolution was adopted giving three streets on Spurgeon Hill the names of Scbroeder, Hite and Per- rott streets, respectively. Gn motion it was ordered to have the ordinance regulating the con duct of saloons iu this city printed in conspicuous form, and a copy fur nished to each saloon for display on the walls, it being the object to rig idly enforce the law with respect to minors, etc. Board then adjourned. —— ------ » *♦»-----------■ State-Aid Railroads. At the late meeting of the Ore- gon-Idaho Development Congress, held at Vale, the congress, through resolutions, declared in favor of State-aid railroads development of Coos Bay harbor and the revival of tbe Malbeut project. Delegates to tbe next congresses to be held in Boise during January and Salem during February, are urged lo do everything in their power to further the construction of a railroad from Boise through Central Oregon to Coos Bay; recom mending that the bay be used by the Federal Government as a great naval and coaling station and com- mi rcial harbor for the shipping of the Pacific Coast. It is urged in the resolutions that tbe delegates urge upon the Legislature of Ore gon tbe importance of enacting at its 1909 session a general law en abling all districts which contain navigable waters in Oregon to or ganize port commissions and to levy taxes for the purpose of raising money to improve the harbors of Oregon. ------- ------- ■ R. D. Hume’s will is dated at San Francisco, California, July 2ud, 1908, and names Mary A. Hume and Charles H. Warner as executrix and executor, but Warner cannot act on property outside of Cali fornia, and thus Mrs. Hume becomes sole administratrix of all Oregon property. To Mrs. Hume he be queathed tbe lots at the corner of Chestnut and Francisco streets in San Francisco and all furniture situated in the residences San Fran cisco, and Piedmont, California; al so all stocks and bonds belonging to deceased at the time of bis death ; also $20,000 in cash. To Herbert Hume and other nephews and nieces, $5,000 each; also various other bequests. The residue of his property is then to be divided up into 100 shares, and numerous of his nephews and nieces are to re- ceive from 5 to 7 shares each, and Mrs Hume 10 shares.
