Last Friday evening the Oratori cal Association of the High School held a public meeting to select rep- j reseulatives agaiust Bandon. Mrs. i W. C. Chase, Mrs. Helen M. Nye, and Miss Nellie Kerrigau acting as | judges To those who enjoy a clean, wholesome entertainment of a high order, the program as rendered af forded a rar6 litarary treatt he par ticipants’ surprised all their friends in the splendid account they gave of themselves. Those who took part und the titles and classifica tions of the pieces were as follows: Oratorical Selections— Ontilines Defiance, Esther Boyd The Curse of Regulus, Maud Ellingsen. Spartacus to the Gladiators, Eva Sugg. Dramatic selections— Thots for a discouraged Farmer, Hattie Sweet. On the Frontier, Leta Mast. The Chariot Race, Belle Thrift. The Gypsy Flower Girl, Iva Howey. Humorous selections— Tim Crnne and Widow Bedott Mildred Slocum. Columbia Crumb Nettie Belloni. Sunday Fishing, Neita Smith. In the oratorical class, Eva Sugg was awarded first place; in the dra matic, Iva Howey; and in the hu. uiorous, Mildred Slocum Accord ing to the markiog of the judges the Iwo closest competitors were iu the dramatic class, Iva Howey win ning over Belle Thrift by less than one per cent. Friday eveuiug of this week the contest with Bandon will take place at the Masonic Hall. It is pl'inned to have the program begin exactly at 8:30. Come and hear the prom ising talent of these two towns, iu their praisworthy competition. An Admission of 25 cents will be charged — members of the school will be admitted for 15 cents—and the proceeds will be used to bear the expense of the Bandon delega tion, the expense of the Hall, and incidental expenses of tho Associa tion. ---- ► ,». Logon, mounted customs guards, were found shot to death near here. It developed later that Jones and Logan fought a duel on the dry bed of the Rio Grande. It is sup posed that eaeh'mistook the other for a smuggler. Three shots were heard, and the pistol of one of the officers had two shells empty and the other one emp ty shell.
