VETERAN’S TAB - Wednesday, Aug. 23,1995-Sect 2. NINE Coquille. JIM CURRAN - U.S. NAVY GEORGE H. WHITNEY-U.S. ARMY June 1943 to Nov. 1945 1929-1954 Sea Bees. Landing craft in New Guinea, construction in the Phillipines. Served in the Southwest Pacific. I have recollections of finding photographs and letters from home to Japanese soldiers and seeing Japanese air planes shot down. Loss of close friends when one of our ships was sunk and the day of the Hiroshima A-bomb an nouncement. ★ ★ ★ RONALD S. HOLBROOK U.S. MARINE CORPS 18 May 1944 to 25 April 1946 Gunner, 30 caliber machine gun crew. Served in the South Pacific, Russell Islands and Okinawa. Memory which stands out is when we hit the beach on Okinawa on Easter Sunday, April 1,1945. ORAN HOLBROOK U.S. ARMY Infantry 4 years, 1929-1933; Army Quartermaster Corps 9 years, 1933 - 1942; Army Ordinance 12 years, 1942 - 1954. Retired at Fort Hood, TX, with 25 years service. After accepting a 2nd Lt. Commission was assigned to 2nd Eng. Amphibian Brigade and put in charge of an Amphibian Truck Platoon, supported and unloaded ships. Served in New Guinea,at Oro Bay and Lae, New Britain Island, Leyte Gulf, and Phillipine Islands.Vividly remember the Kamakazi attacks on harbor ships and the explosion of 82 tons of explosives at Red Beach, Leyte, P.L set off by Japanese Commandos. Sent to Korea until 1951 then boarded a ship and sailed under the Golden Gate Bridge to Salinas, California. GLENN B. THOMPSON - U.S. ARMY 6 Feb. 1942 TO 3 Feb. 1946 Signal Corps. Served in the Philipines and the South Pacific. My most vivid recollection during service in WWII is being sea sick for 26 days from San Francisco to the Phillipines on an erratic liberty ship. EUGENE ASH - UJS. NAVY 13 Sept 1942 to 12 Dec. 1945 1 July 1943 to 7 Feb. 194« Served in the Army Infantry in the South Pacific. I was injured on Luzon, served at Guadalcanal and the Phil lipines. I had two brothers in the service also. Have Purple Heart and other medals. Boatswains Mate. I was assigned to 100th Naval const. Battalion. Served in Hawaii, Samar, and the Phillipines. I worked on construction of a hospital, road construction, ammunition bunkers and a bridge. * Samar was a small island in the Philippine Chain, next to Leyte and the Leyte Gulf, so became a part of the Battle for Leyte Gulf, the greatest naval battle of all times.
