Sentinel/Herald—Wednesday, Feb. 20,1985-B-5 Romance worried Mrs. Pierce’s parents “I was determined to go with Hal,” she says. “Two or three other girls liked him and I had to be on the scene to be sure I got him.” The family was so concerned, they decided to send Emma away to live with a sister in Washington for a year. “My folks didn’t think he was good enough for me,” she says. The sister was me ticulous and that conflicted with Emma’s personally. “We didn’t hit it off too good.” Still, she had to stay and she claims to have cried often. She went through the first year of high school while staying with the sister, but finished the next year when she re turned to Coquille. High school stopped at the lOth-grade and she graduated with 15 others in the class of 1908. Her situation with Hal didn’t improve until one evening when she told her par ents how things were going to be. “Finally, one day I said Hal’s coming tonight. If I can’t go out with him, I’m moving out,” she says. “I was onery.” Her parents consented and Hal and Emma were married on Dec. 6, 1911, when she was 22. They lived happily everafter in Co quille, watching the town change from a frontier logging town with stilted wooden sidewalks and plank streets to its modern paved self. Happy Birthday Coquille!
